JAXSON (229), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 1, 2009 Pours a deep plum with cola-like bubbles and a wispy thin head. Nose is malt forward and pretty big on bourbon. Dark fruits and brown sugar shine. Extremely sugary in the mouth, but bitter enough that it isn’t maddening. Huge, bold flavors. Bourbon, brown sugar, some faint hops, more bourbon. More bourbon than fruit here, maybe too much? Strong and intense, but a bit too extreme for my tastes. Thanks Scott! darkguardian (506), Florida, USA Oct 16, 2009 12oz bottle thanks to Kevin. Man this is a crazy crazy beer. Huge malt backbone on this with tons of caramel, bourbon, brown sugar. It smells somewhat like an english barleywine but you do get a hint of resin and pine on the very backend of the nose. The flavor is rich and very full bodied. And also somewhat hot (but not overly considering the abv). Rich chewy caramel, brown sugar and toasted grain with tons of rich hop flavor. Substantial bitterness but it has a hard time fighting through the malt sweetness and comes out very balanced. This is one of the best "triple" IPA’s I’ve seen. Really really well crafted. hopscotch (5440), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Oct 9, 2009 Bottle… This beer rocks!… Hazy burnt orange ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head that disappears immediately. The aroma is a medley of singed caramel, sour mash and earthy hops. Full-bodied with a fatty mouthfeel and lively carbonation. The flavor is a blistering assault of gooey caramel, red hot alcohol and intense lupulin. I love it! Another world class oddity from Shorts! Stay weird, guys. holdenn (1432), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 31, 2009 12 oz bottle biked out of the brewery and sitting in my fridge for almost a year now, apparently waiting for the right time to open. This must be the time. Pours a slightly hazed brown orange with almost no head just a thin beige ring. Sweet oaked ipa aroma. Caramel malts, cherries, candied sugars, bourbon, booze, touch of papery oxidation. The oxidation comes off really nice. Boozy bourbon flavors with the oak and hops subdued under those oxidized malts and alcohol. The richness of the oak and bourbon is nice but its super sweet and boozy overall. 12 oz would be tough to finish solo. Headbanger (1574), Aurora, Illinois, USA May 22, 2009 12oz bottle 3/30/09 (Purchased at Shorts)-Pours a dark amber with a small head that dissipates into nothing. Aroma of bourbon and vanilla. Flavor of bourbon and vanilla with more bourbon. The middle and end brought out some hops and maple. This full bodied brew was a bit hot but still great tasting. thickfreakness (130), AUSTIN, Texas, USA May 21, 2009 This is my second time having this one and the second bottle is even better than the first.
Pours burnt amber color with short lived off white head. Aroma of bourbon, huge vanilla (almost vanilla creme like), alcohol, fresh pine needles, burnt caramel malt, grapefruit and more alcohol. Taste is similar with a huge hit of bourbon and vanilla up front followed by some alcohol heat and rich caramel and a pine/grapefruit bitter finish. Thick decadent mouthfeel and plenty of carbonation for the style. I really enjoyed this one. Even more than the first time.
brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Jan 16, 2009 2007 Anniversary brew
Pours sparkling clear ruby red, with a half inch head of off-white. A few errant dots of lacework remain after the humble foam cap dissolved.
Aromatics are brash, boozy, and intense.
Black pepper-studded earthy wood gets quickly smothered by boozy whiskey, sweet malt, and alcohol-spiked grapefruit.
Some additional citrus tries to step forward, but the bourbon is dominant, and almost nostril clearing.
A hint of vanilla and cedar trails behind.
Thick and chewy body, with a syrupy, sticky mouthfeel.
Sweet malt, bourbon, and juicy citrus lead off the pallet. A building blaze of whiskey fusels steps up and towers over resinous hopping and firm bitterness. Only after a good duration does the whisky start to fade, and some earthy wood makes it’s presense known. Hints of Schezuan peppercorns, grapefruit pith, and vanilla swim in the lingering sweet malt and bourbon fumes.
Finishes with lingering boozy heat, a cedar-like earthiness, and juicy malt.
This is a big, bad, barleyine. It should be called "no bones about it".
This is the beer that would beat up on Angels Share, Arctic Devil, and Fred from The Wood in the sandbox.
Very nice, a good follow-up to Black Albert.
Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jan 7, 2009 Botlle courtesy of Styles. Big bourbon wood and alcohol on the nose. Amber body with tan thin head disipated rather qiuick by alcohol. Bourbon flavor thoughout with some yeasty bread notes that reminded me of a barley wine. Sweet caramel in the mix a potent and filling winter warmer. Thanks Chris
