12oz bottle. The grapefruit hits the nose at first... so far so good. As I bring the glass closer, I’m smacked in the face with an intense fusel alcohol presence... I can only assume that the barreling produced this. Trying to look past the booziness, I get toffee malt, wet wood, very mild resinous hops along the lines of pine resin. Pours a nondescript muddy dark orange/brown with a thin film atop. Grapefruit, sticky malt and barrel on the tongue. Muddy flavors really don’t blend well with each other. The alcohol is too distracting on the nose and the hops, malt and barrel really don’t mesh well. Full bodied, bordering on sticky with a boozy and dry finish. While I applaud Joe’s efforts and creativity, he took a big swing with this one and missed. Thanks Brian!

Bottle, sampled thanks to WeeHeavySD. Pours a hazy orange-amber with a white head. Rich aroma, of malt, citrus, hops, pine, and spice. Taste is sharp, of malt, grass, pine, wood, and grapefruit. Lingering sharpness. Odd, but very tasty.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy dark amber color with a small off white head. The aroma is sweetened grapefruit peel, caramel candy, and some alcohol. The flavor is more big grapefruit and citrus. It also has a large caramel malt component. Everything is thick, resiny, and smooth. The alcohol does show through with this, but doesn’t distract from the overall. I also believe that some of the original bitterness has disapeared and this now has some barleywine like qualities. This was still very enjoyable.

12oz via trade with alexsdad, shared with dalekliz, NYE 08. Pours orange with a tan head. Nose is incredible huge grapefruit and citrus. Amazing!! Taste is really big and citrussy with a good kick of booze, this is really cool.

2006 Vintage

10/30/2008: Short’s Brew Anniversary Part Deux Double IPA (Grapefruit Version) has an aroma of sugar-coated candied grapefruit peel preserved in alcohol. It is cloudy, dirty amber-brown in color with minimal crown. There is a huge tofee maltiness in the front of the flavor that is CHEWY and followed by fruity citrus hops and a light barrel flavor. The bitterness is low and a bit of alcohol can be felt through the nose. THe finish is VERY dry - it just sucks the moisture from your mouth! There is a very low level of carbonation creating a smooth, mellow and creamy palate (hints of creamy caramel from the barrel-aging). Overall this brew is efinitely warming and filling! It has impressive size and flavor, but lacks any real bitterness for a Double IPA. I realize that this is because of the nine months in the bourbon barrel, but I would have hoped for more bitterness from the grapefruit. It is really more like a more like a good barleywine at this point...

12 fl. oz. bottle ("Double IPA bourbon barrel aged with grapefruit for nine months.") shared by alexsdad06 at the weekly Party Source gathering. Thanks a lot Brad! I really appreciate it. Rating #32 for this beer...

Bottle shared by Alexsdad06. Poured a cloudy copper color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good to excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex citrus hoppy and woody aroma with a small alcohol tone. Medium to full body with a dry smooth texture. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.

orange pour with a small white head. Chocolate, bourbon, and hop citrus in the aroma. Similar flavor with lots of toffee and some WTF? Boozy finish and the flavors don’t blend together that well. This one was still very interesting....Thanks general_gao!

Bottle shared by thickfreakness. Thanks man!
Pours a nice orange amber color with a very small whitish head. Smell is a bit alcoholic, but not in a bad way, with citrusy sweetness. Taset is like grapefruit syrup, and fresh ruby red grapefruit juice. Some warming alcohol, but not too much. Unique, and tasty, but didn’t really get bourbon specifically.
