Aroma is faint and short-lived, what’s there is lightly caramelized malt and a bit of carbonic sourness. Flavor is light caramel malt, just enough bitter flavors to balance the sweetness, but not really noticeable in there own right. Medium body, slightly tannic on the palate. ditmier (1117), Boise, Idaho, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 16, 2009 Bottle from dmschefke. Thanks! Pours a clear brown color with lasting, creamy beige head. Smell is toasted and almost roasty grains with a chocolate hint. Taste is semi-sweet, chocolate malt and caramel with a very light balancing bitterness. Some cardboard and off flavor and a bit watery in the flavor, but not too bad. Medium to thin body and normal carbonation. Decent brown ale. Cornfield (4978), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 12, 2009 Tasted at a The LoSBD meeting, thanks to RAYBOY01: This poured a chestnut body with a short-lived white head. It had a rich caramelly, malty aroma with a touch of milk chocolate. The flavor was much the same and had the addition of a light nutty bitterness. Quaffable. dm9831 (1167), Monee, Illinois, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 7, 2009 12oz Bottle. A somewhat smoky well-caramelized brown malt, with a touch of burnt toast, some light sea salts and a bit of oat. Okay. Pours a well-hazed ruddied brown, with minimal off-white head. Flavor is a bit peculiar. There’s a mashup of cold cigarette butts, some light elephant and rubber, flared with a bit of styrofoam a la bad water. Deeper, chewier caramels come up from the bottom. A nip of tang. I’m not sure this is working for me. English style yeast gives a mostly clean finish. Meh. Thanks Sean! GodOfThunder (884), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 4, 2009 Thanks to Northernbrews for the bottles. Looks light, tastes light. Caramel and an almost strange toasted malt. Not a warming and rich malty flavor. I know this is their basic brown, and I love Short’s, but this isn’t doing much for me.
