Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of black cherries, roast, chocolate, smoke and grape skins. Tastes of black cherries (more than the aromas), chocolate, roast, and vanilla. Chocolate covered cherries. Yet another winner from Shorts! Ernest (4229), Boulder, Colorado, USA Aug 31, 2008 Bottle.
Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, husks), lightly hoppy (resin), with light notes of cherry/berry.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly husky.
Medium body, watery texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Some vegetal/husky malt character detracts a bit. Otherwise not too interesting or rich. Lackluster mouthfeel for its size. BBB63 (3801), La Porte, Indiana, USA Feb 24, 2008 2008 MBG Winter Fest: Deep brown with reddish highlight, foamy head and some spotty lace. The aroma has notes of walnut, toasted barley, cherry, plum, chocolate, vanilla, wood, and some resiny hop esters. The taste displays a twangy and syrupy fruit overtone over a layer of sweet malt and chocolate. The finish is tannic and dry surprisingly with a fair amount of hop and coffee bitterness. The mouth thin is sprite and thin, refreshing. I like the twangy cherries in this brew that are highlighted and not overpowering. A really nice beer that I would love to get a bottle of. heemer77 (3669), Savannah, Missouri, USA May 19, 2008 Perfectly black body with a light rusty brown head. The aroma is up front with the black cherries and walnuts. There is also a floral note, like roses. Then, you notice the big time malt, lots of caramel and some roasted coffee. The taste is fairly strong roast with the rich black cherries bringing up the rear. Definite notes of quality tobacco come through in the finish. The body is fairly thin, but it’s still a little sticky. Pretty good, but this is more of a big porter than a fruit beer. I wanted to like this one more, but cherries never seem to mesh too well with malty beers for me, even when well made.
