kmweaver (1770), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA May 9, 2008 750mL bottle, #213/792, courtesy of hoppymeal. Thanks, Derek! Pours a very dark chocolate brown color; medium tan head with solid, fine-bubbled lacing. Lots of bitter baker’s chocolate, red grapes and dark fruit, cocoa and some nougat in the aroma; pleasant fruit-infused porter. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: average levels of carbonation; pleasant cherry and dark fruit character mingling with a solid porter core; roasted malts and chocolate and bitter dark cherry character; solid fruit presence, like most Shorts beers, it seems; well-balanced with a tasty chocolate core. Lengthy finish: dark chocolate, nougat and cocoa, and dark cherries.
dalekliz (124), San Diego, California, USA Jul 4, 2008 Bottle, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing it. Poured a deep, dark brown with a small brown head. Big sweet aroma of toasted malt, black cherries and chocolate. Reminds me of black cherry ice cream. Big taste of toasted malt, chocolate and a lot of cherry. Hint of tartness at the end. Lingering sharp malt and cherries. Delicious. The_Epeeist (872), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 27, 2008 25.6 oz bottle. Had this one a few weeks ago and luckily my rating sheet was still in the recycling bin. Dark burgundy brown with a thin tan head. Nose is black cherry and mocha; chocolate covered cherries with an espresso center. Medium light with a tart woody tang. Taste is black cherry jam, coffee and brown sugar. Dry finish with green plum, kind of vinous. I love the way the fruit peels away to reveal a rich porter. WeeHeavySD (1511), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 12, 2008 Bottle 214/792, via my pal hoppymeal, you derek are a god amongst men. Wow what a cool beer. Pours dark black with a thin light brown head that faded from 2 fingers. Nose is full of cherries and dark with big malts and some caramel feeling. Taste is a clear cut rich porter with lots of cherry, its really tasty and overall incredibly well crafted. Gotta say I agree with hopdog, chocolate covered cherries indeed. heemer77 (3536), North Liberty, Iowa, USA May 19, 2008 Perfectly black body with a light rusty brown head. The aroma is up front with the black cherries and walnuts. There is also a floral note, like roses. Then, you notice the big time malt, lots of caramel and some roasted coffee. The taste is fairly strong roast with the rich black cherries bringing up the rear. Definite notes of quality tobacco come through in the finish. The body is fairly thin, but it’s still a little sticky. Pretty good, but this is more of a big porter than a fruit beer. I wanted to like this one more, but cherries never seem to mesh too well with malty beers for me, even when well made. argo0 (6004), Washington DC, USA May 9, 2008 (750ml bottle, #213/792, thanks kmweaver) Black body topped by small brown head. Aroma is medium sweet, black cherry, chocolate, some smoke, light roast. Taste is medium sweet, black cherry, some chocolate, light cola. Medium body, some stickiness, low carbonation.
