Thanks to mibirder for this - pours a dark brown, nearly black, with a small tan head - the aroma is mostly dark chocolate, with some very mild anise underneath, and a slight doughy character - smooth, medium bodied - the flavor chocolate heavy, with hints of roast - the licorice flavor works well underneath this, and never becomes too powerful - the mint is present at the back, and plays off the licorice very well - that doughiness is there at the back again, making it a little less enjoyable, but this is quite nice.

75 cL bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a diminished white head. Spiced and dry annis seed aroma. Smooth chocolate and dense spiced flavoured with a dry base flavour. Dry and annis seed finish with a mild chocolate malt base. Smooth.

(Bottle 75 cl) Clear warm reddish brown with a creamy light brown head. Very spicy nose with some hard roasted malts. Medium body, very spicy with cinnamon and cardemom and also some hints of licorice. Fairly bitter in the finish. 311008

750ml from a fine feller on BA - thanks, Andrew! What a fucked up brewery. And I say fucked up with love and admiration. It’s a nice dark pour, with a quickly rising head that dissipates just as quickly, leaving faint lacing. Moderate body. Sharp nose with the advertised ingredients. Upon first sips I thought – much as I have with some other Shorts beers (spruce pilsner, e.g.) – that it was too much and I wouldn’t be able to make it through. When am I going to learn to trust this guy? Awesome, blends in nicely with the toasted malts of a black lager. Don’t really get much of the vanilla or barrel (the mint’s there in traces). Robust, bitter, just a bit nasty. I dig.

Bottle pours black with a thin off white head. Aroma is very spicy. Sassafrass and anise. These smells are very subdued. Has a medium body. Flavor is mainly root beer, black licorice, and finishes with a clean crisp taste. Overall, this is very sweet licorice beer. Nice!

750ml bottle (#159 of 744). Poured an opaque black color with a brown head. The aroma was a little roasty with distinct, but subdued anise. There was also a whiff of tobacco. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Chocolate, anise, tobacco, and subdued mint made up the flavor profile. Solid.
