Tasted at Noogfest 4.0 (2008). This spiced ale pours a dark black color from a 750ml bottle. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is licorice, malt and grain, but mostly licorice. A medium bodied ale. The malts are caramel and fruity, lots of black licorice. The hops are kind of earthy. There is a birch like quality I am getting as well as the black licorice. This will probably be a love it or hate it beer. Yet another interesting beer from Shorts. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

This smells good, but nothing but licorice in the flavor. Disgusting. Paired with a richer malt, it could have been drinkable. In fact, I had a beer later in the night I think has anise as well, but had a richer malt profile that made it nice. This is the only beer I poured out at the Noogfest.

Noogfest Four-O

Bottle, courtesy Heemer77. Dark brown pour, hazy white head and plenty of lacing. Black licorice, SHOCKINGLY, in the aroma, with some cinnamon. Flavor is almost all black licorice with chocolate and caramel to boot. I’m not a fan of black licorice at all but it works in beer. Decent enough and not overpowering.

Bottle from Heemer77 at Noogfest 08. Pours brown-black with a tan head. Lots of herbs and licorice in the nose- sort of like cough syrup. Medium bodied with a smooth texture. Flavor is pretty straight forward-black licorice and dark chocolate, but not overly sweet. Odd, but in a good way.

Bottle shared at Sean and Ryans tasting at the apartment in Carlsbad. This one really stood out for intrigue. Insane aroma that is jammed full of licorice root and chocolate. I have no idea how old this bottle was. Black color with a medium head. The mint stands out on the rear end of the flavor profile. Super drinkable and a real pleasure to smell.

Awesome bottle brought to Sean’s tasting last night. Pours black with a tan head. Nose is incredibly intense with lots of licorice in the nose. Taste is crazy, completely licorice city, with hints of chocolate. A really special beer.
