hapjydeuce (564), Carlsbad, California, USA May 18, 2008 Bottle shared at Sean and Ryans tasting at the apartment in Carlsbad. This one really stood out for intrigue. Insane aroma that is jammed full of licorice root and chocolate. I have no idea how old this bottle was. Black color with a medium head. The mint stands out on the rear end of the flavor profile. Super drinkable and a real pleasure to smell.
Grovlam (3086), Copenhagen, Denmark Sep 1, 2008 Bottle. [Drikkeriget Grand Shorts Imperial Series tasting, thanks to Jeppe for another great session] Average creamy beige head that mostly lasted. Good display of lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of peppermint, vanilla, aniseed, roasted malt, coffee, liquorish, mild chocolate. Over the palate came spicy and mild harsh bitter roasted notes that felt a bit unpleasant. Full bodied with a soft carbonation and thick texture. Moderated bitter flavor with some counter sweetness. Roasted bitter malty finish. arjoseph (554), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 22, 2008 GABF 2007. It was tough for me to decide whether this or the Spruce was better, as I stood at the Shorts booth for what seemed like a solid 20 minutes getting refills with cquiroga and awaisanen. Nice head, even in the small tasting glass. Smells like ouzo with toffee. Smooth lactic sweetness in the mouth, craisins without the tang, and of course anise (although this is much more pronounced in the smell than in the taste, where it is more of an echo counterpoint in the finish). Great and unique beer; kudos to the guys at Shorts. alexsdad06 (620), Ohio, USA Aug 17, 2008 Bottle purchased at the brewpub. This pours black ...if it’s not black it’s damn close...with a medium sized biege head. The aroma is anise/black licorice first and foremost accompanied by semi sweet chocolate, mint, lightly roasted malt, and vanilla. The flavor once again leans toward the licorice side (hey, it’s in the title) with help from the semi sweet chocolate, mint, vanill, a touch of fruitiness, and lightly roasted malt. I get a root beer like sensation as have others. I almost didn’t get any of these, but one of the bartenders suggested that I give this one a try. This one proved to be very interesting lassem (110), Copenhagen, Denmark Aug 8, 2008 Black all black hail thau black.. brown head. The nose is vanilla, salmiaci licorice and anis. Havn´t had a beer with this kind of aroma...very special. It taste very vinoes and is dominated of the taste of english licorice, burned almonds and notes of mint, orange. (crepes Suzette). The finish has a light abundance with a light cacao-bitterness TURDFERGUSON (1136), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Aug 5, 2008 Bottle shared by eclectic at BCTC. Thanks Kevin!
