kmweaver (1770), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA May 9, 2008 22oz bottle, courtesy of hoppymeal. Thanks, Derek! Pours a dark, reddish-cola color; light tan head with patchy, fine-bubbled lacing. Very nice, blended bourbon presence in the aroma; toasty oak, milk chocolate, and caramel; generous, toasty barrel presence in the aroma; soft, chewy nose. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lightly carbonated; soft, toasty bourbon character showing vanilla and minimal alcohol, if any; dark chocolate, caramel, nougat, and soft, toasty vanilla; velvety mouthfeel, toasty wood and oakiness; just a carefully blended, toasty and generous beer; very drinkable. Lengthy finish, showing cocoa, dark chocolate, and toasty oak and vanilla; barrel presence is beautifully integrated.
Odeed (1415), Bakersfield, California, USA Jul 7, 2008 orange/brown body with a small light brown head.the aroma is a nice mix of bourbon, vanilla, wood, and some roasted malts.flavor is much of the same with some dark fruit thrown in.well balanced and still full of that b"ba" flavor. BeerVirgin72 (553), C-Bus, Ohio, USA Jun 30, 2008 Bottle shared at Cbus tasting 11. Poured a dark brown black color. Aroma was vanilla malts and bourbon. Taste was a bit wild for me. A bit of everything. Vanilla, malts, chocolate, lots of bourbon, and even some sort of tartiness. A fruit, cherries, maybe? goldtwins (3668), Nesconset, New York, USA Jun 28, 2008 Poured a clear deep red-brown color with an off-white head. Bourbon aroma is moderate and balanced with some vanilla and a light roast. Well blended. The flavor is of roasted malt and vanilla. Light-medium bodied. jimbowood (699), Athens, Georgia, USA Jun 25, 2008 bottle from mibirder. This is a great example of the depth and complexity that bourbon barrel aging can add to a beer. Bourbon really complements this brew. Very good, very smooth, and very drinkable. heemer77 (3536), North Liberty, Iowa, USA Jun 23, 2008 Bomber. Nearly perfect black body was topped with a khaki head. The aroma was fairly strong bourbon with the oak and some vanilla. There is also a leathery note. The little bit of cola is behind that character. The taste is like bourbon and Coke more than anything else. Once you get past that mixed drink character, you get a little bit of peanuts and chocolate. But again, bourbon and Coke dominate, something I do not recall tasting in a beer. This may please those that love the sweet Schwarzbiers, but I prefer the ones that have mroe roasted character. Huge disappointment as I normally love Shorts.
