Keir (15), Saint Louis, Missouri, USA Sep 13, 2009 Bottle #121/1104. Bottled on 02.27.07. Shared with sneagrams and others on 09.10.09. Pours hazy yellow color with off-white head. Nose is full of ginger with slight spice. Tastes of ginger with a bitter/sour note. As a fan of ginger, I enjoyed it. sebletitje (1880), Tampa, Florida, USA Aug 16, 2009 courtesy of the Shorts tasting night group.
Pours hazy golden/orange straw with a thin white head.
Aroma and flavor are primarily of good ginger spices with thick rye overtones and some thin hints of yeast adding to the haze of the beer.
One of the best ginger beer out there, especially considering that all these bottles are from early ’07. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 15, 2009 Bottle from the brewery. This grew on me. Drinkable enough ginger, with the rye a little edgey and coming through mid-sip, with a softening hefe mouthfeel. Different tastes came through with different parts of lunch and the bottle was completely drained. Big head. madsberg (4873), Søborg, Denmark Jul 12, 2009 Bottled. Dark golden coloured. Unclear. Dense beige head. Ginger, fruits and light spice in the aroma. Light citric. Flavour of alcohol, grape, ginger and fruits. Medium bodied. Grapish and light sourish end. Ginger still notable. Not my favourite from Shorts. mirjukka (695), LOHJA, Finland Jun 14, 2009 bottle 750ml 25€ shared at Pikkulintu Helsinki 28.03.09 amber small white head. Pleasant sour spicy balanced ginger lemon. Reminds me about summer on last snow storm day of this winter. Alcohol well hidden under spicy body. anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden May 26, 2009 Bottle. Pours a hazy golden color with a small white head. Has a rye malty spicy ginger aroma with some hints of lemon. Fruity spicy ginger and lemon flavor with some hints of rye. Has a fruity malty spicy ginger finish. Headbanger (1574), Aurora, Illinois, USA May 22, 2009 750ml bottle 210/1104 Brewed 1/10&15/07 4/2/09 (Purchased Shorts)-Pours an orangish amber with a huge white head that dissipates into a small covering. Aroma of ginger, clove, and banana. Flavor the same with more ginger and banana. This light to medium bodied beer was more hefe with ginger than rye. GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 16, 2009 Big thanks to Derek for another rare Shorts beer, 750mL bottle, number 7 of 1104, poured into a tulip.
Pours a slightly hazy bright orange with an enormous three inch head that leaves clumps of lacing on the glass and remains a cap for the duration. There is also a constant stream of bubbles streaming up to the top.
The aroma has a fairly strong ginger presence and plenty of typical hefe aroma hiding behind it - some banana sweetness and cloves. There may be a bit of rye spiciness as well but I’m not sure I can differentiate between that and the clove.
The taste is really interesting and doesn’t taste exactly like the aroma. It’s a got a zing of ginger up front and the hefe characteristics are certainly less evident as in the nose. Unlike the aroma, the rye really comes out in the finish with a spiciness that lingers between sips.
The mouthfeel is extremely smooth, likely due to the rye, and has a ton of carbonation, probably too much.
As with many of the Shorts beers I’ve had, this one really pushing the limits of styles and the flavors are bold and aggressive, definitely limiting the drinkability. I’m not convinced it all comes together perfectly, but it’s a creative effort (as always) from Shorts.
