Commercial Description:
Robust imperial porter fermented with 780lbs of Michigan sweet black cherries.

I’ve been brewing this beer every summer since 2004, so it’s essentially the odd beer in the series. We bottled it as a ’safety’ beer in case I couldn’t finish the rest of the series in time. Every year when the sweet black cherries are ripe and falling off the trees we go fill up our giant tub full of cherries. Every year I have processed the cherries differently. The first time I attempted to mash them up by stomping on hem with my bare feet. After lots and lots of mashing and frozen purple toes, I went to a blender. One pitcher at a time for 500 pounds they were chopped and tossed into the fermenter. The following year I tried pressing them with an apple press with struggled results. On this particular batch I bought pitted cherries and went back to the blend, one pitcher at a time until all 500 lbs. were blended and poured into the fermenter. Northern Michigan is a leading cherry produced in the United States primarily with the tart cherry production. Its sweet cherry production ranks in the top four with the Grand Traverse region producing 80% of the production at 50 million pounds. Cherries contain anthocyanins which are strong anti-oxidants that reduce pain and inflammations. Cherries also contain melatonin which is great for strengthening the immune system. They are rich in vitamin C and potassium which is good for your skin and for a healthy heart. Sweet cherries date back to pre-historic Asia. They have been enjoyed for centuries by Roman conquerers, Greek citizens and Chinese noblemen. Pliny the Elder tells us they arrived in Italy around 74 B.C. They made their way to Britain and across the ocean a few hundred years later. The Black Cherry Porter Recipe was our very first "imperial" strength beer ever brewed at SBC. I remember nearly overflowing the mash tun with malt until it crested the top of the man way doors, and staying with it all night long because the thick heavy mash made the process extremely slow. This beer was important to include in the series because it’s a good example of the ridiculous amount of work we put into the imperial series. We try to keep our ingredients fresh and local, putting the power of the smallness back into the hardworking Northern Michigander. This is one example of a luscious American porter touched with a subtle essence of Northern Michigan sweet black cherries.

Bottle 220 of 792. Poured an opaque black color with a light brown head. Smelled of chocolate, roasty malt, subdued dark fruits, and brown sugar. Medium bodied and dry. There was a hint of cherry tartness without any overt cherry flavor. Very roasty with chocolate, nuts, and a hint of anise. I also detected a slight papery oxidized note.

Black with a small off-white head. Licorice and roast malt aroma. Dry and smooth roasted flavour. It has a peculiar refreshing fruity quality, but nothing I’d have picked as cherry in a blind tasting. Very pleasant beer.

Bottle. [Drikkeriget Grand Shorts Imperial Series tasting, thanks to Jeppe for another great session] Average creamy brown head that mostly lasted. Fair display of lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, liquorish, berries, roasted malt and light sour cherry. Full bodied with a soft carbonation and a thick texture. Moderated sweet flavor with good counter bitterness and a hint of acidic. Roasted malty and black cherry sour finish.

Bottle shared by Crosling, thanks dog. Poured a thick black color with a moderate beige head with a slight pink hue that diminished to a ring. Aroma of chocolate malt, ripe cherries, light toffee, and a light smokiness. Sweet, lightly tart entry with some undertones of cherry and chocolate malt transition into a light toffee presence and a light chalkiness with some slight cherry in the finish. Low carbonation, felt thin on the palate, not nearly as robust as you would expect. Overall, a decent brew, but the flavors just aren’t strong enough to warrant a higher rating.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, husks), lightly hoppy (resin), with light notes of cherry/berry. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly husky. Medium body, watery texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Some vegetal/husky malt character detracts a bit. Otherwise not too interesting or rich. Lackluster mouthfeel for its size.

750 mL, hand bottled, bottle conditioned. Very dark brown black colored beer, with a smooth, well layered tan head. Outstanding nose, with a fudge-like malts, rich dark chocolate and a light essence of cherry. Flavors are very subtle and it does lack some richness. Unfortunately, doesn’t have a lot of complexity. Nicely textured.

Like the New Zealand rugby team: All Blacks.. this one is really all black. Head is fluffy and brown but fading. The nose is roasted and burned almonds . The taste is full of roasted malts with sour notes (from the cherrys?) and coffée. The palate is a bit waterish
