Commercial Description:
Robust imperial porter fermented with 780lbs of Michigan sweet black cherries.

I’ve been brewing this beer every summer since 2004, so it’s essentially the odd beer in the series. We bottled it as a ’safety’ beer in case I couldn’t finish the rest of the series in time. Every year when the sweet black cherries are ripe and falling off the trees we go fill up our giant tub full of cherries. Every year I have processed the cherries differently. The first time I attempted to mash them up by stomping on hem with my bare feet. After lots and lots of mashing and frozen purple toes, I went to a blender. One pitcher at a time for 500 pounds they were chopped and tossed into the fermenter. The following year I tried pressing them with an apple press with struggled results. On this particular batch I bought pitted cherries and went back to the blend, one pitcher at a time until all 500 lbs. were blended and poured into the fermenter. Northern Michigan is a leading cherry produced in the United States primarily with the tart cherry production. Its sweet cherry production ranks in the top four with the Grand Traverse region producing 80% of the production at 50 million pounds. Cherries contain anthocyanins which are strong anti-oxidants that reduce pain and inflammations. Cherries also contain melatonin which is great for strengthening the immune system. They are rich in vitamin C and potassium which is good for your skin and for a healthy heart. Sweet cherries date back to pre-historic Asia. They have been enjoyed for centuries by Roman conquerers, Greek citizens and Chinese noblemen. Pliny the Elder tells us they arrived in Italy around 74 B.C. They made their way to Britain and across the ocean a few hundred years later. The Black Cherry Porter Recipe was our very first "imperial" strength beer ever brewed at SBC. I remember nearly overflowing the mash tun with malt until it crested the top of the man way doors, and staying with it all night long because the thick heavy mash made the process extremely slow. This beer was important to include in the series because it’s a good example of the ridiculous amount of work we put into the imperial series. We try to keep our ingredients fresh and local, putting the power of the smallness back into the hardworking Northern Michigander. This is one example of a luscious American porter touched with a subtle essence of Northern Michigan sweet black cherries.

Tasted at the Carolina Crew gathering, Greenville - thanks to Paul Philippon for sharing this serious gem. Medium bodied, creamy mouth-feel. Bittersweet flavor with a big dark cherry finish! Notes of earthy wood. Reminds me of chocolate covered cherries

Tasted at the Carolina Crew gathering, Greenville - thanks to Paul Philippon for sharing! This one poured slightly thin to me but it was compensated for by the distinctiveness of the brew, nicely dry without compromising the malts and possessed of a very well integrated black cherry (again, solid to include the black variety which complements the base beer). Slightly bitter at times, still full and fruity, this one was quite nice.

Bottle, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing it. Poured a deep, dark brown with a small brown head. Big sweet aroma of toasted malt, black cherries and chocolate. Reminds me of black cherry ice cream. Big taste of toasted malt, chocolate and a lot of cherry. Hint of tartness at the end. Lingering sharp malt and cherries. Delicious.

25.6 oz bottle. Had this one a few weeks ago and luckily my rating sheet was still in the recycling bin. Dark burgundy brown with a thin tan head. Nose is black cherry and mocha; chocolate covered cherries with an espresso center. Medium light with a tart woody tang. Taste is black cherry jam, coffee and brown sugar. Dry finish with green plum, kind of vinous. I love the way the fruit peels away to reveal a rich porter.

Bottle 214/792, via my pal hoppymeal, you derek are a god amongst men. Wow what a cool beer. Pours dark black with a thin light brown head that faded from 2 fingers. Nose is full of cherries and dark with big malts and some caramel feeling. Taste is a clear cut rich porter with lots of cherry, its really tasty and overall incredibly well crafted. Gotta say I agree with hopdog, chocolate covered cherries indeed.

Perfectly black body with a light rusty brown head. The aroma is up front with the black cherries and walnuts. There is also a floral note, like roses. Then, you notice the big time malt, lots of caramel and some roasted coffee. The taste is fairly strong roast with the rich black cherries bringing up the rear. Definite notes of quality tobacco come through in the finish. The body is fairly thin, but it’s still a little sticky. Pretty good, but this is more of a big porter than a fruit beer. I wanted to like this one more, but cherries never seem to mesh too well with malty beers for me, even when well made.

750mL bottle, #213/792, courtesy of hoppymeal. Thanks, Derek! Pours a very dark chocolate brown color; medium tan head with solid, fine-bubbled lacing. Lots of bitter baker’s chocolate, red grapes and dark fruit, cocoa and some nougat in the aroma; pleasant fruit-infused porter. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: average levels of carbonation; pleasant cherry and dark fruit character mingling with a solid porter core; roasted malts and chocolate and bitter dark cherry character; solid fruit presence, like most Shorts beers, it seems; well-balanced with a tasty chocolate core. Lengthy finish: dark chocolate, nougat and cocoa, and dark cherries.
