Commercial Description:
Robust imperial porter fermented with 780lbs of Michigan sweet black cherries.

I’ve been brewing this beer every summer since 2004, so it’s essentially the odd beer in the series. We bottled it as a ’safety’ beer in case I couldn’t finish the rest of the series in time. Every year when the sweet black cherries are ripe and falling off the trees we go fill up our giant tub full of cherries. Every year I have processed the cherries differently. The first time I attempted to mash them up by stomping on hem with my bare feet. After lots and lots of mashing and frozen purple toes, I went to a blender. One pitcher at a time for 500 pounds they were chopped and tossed into the fermenter. The following year I tried pressing them with an apple press with struggled results. On this particular batch I bought pitted cherries and went back to the blend, one pitcher at a time until all 500 lbs. were blended and poured into the fermenter. Northern Michigan is a leading cherry produced in the United States primarily with the tart cherry production. Its sweet cherry production ranks in the top four with the Grand Traverse region producing 80% of the production at 50 million pounds. Cherries contain anthocyanins which are strong anti-oxidants that reduce pain and inflammations. Cherries also contain melatonin which is great for strengthening the immune system. They are rich in vitamin C and potassium which is good for your skin and for a healthy heart. Sweet cherries date back to pre-historic Asia. They have been enjoyed for centuries by Roman conquerers, Greek citizens and Chinese noblemen. Pliny the Elder tells us they arrived in Italy around 74 B.C. They made their way to Britain and across the ocean a few hundred years later. The Black Cherry Porter Recipe was our very first "imperial" strength beer ever brewed at SBC. I remember nearly overflowing the mash tun with malt until it crested the top of the man way doors, and staying with it all night long because the thick heavy mash made the process extremely slow. This beer was important to include in the series because it’s a good example of the ridiculous amount of work we put into the imperial series. We try to keep our ingredients fresh and local, putting the power of the smallness back into the hardworking Northern Michigander. This is one example of a luscious American porter touched with a subtle essence of Northern Michigan sweet black cherries.

Poured a murky dark brown / black color with a medium sized tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, sweeter black cherry, vanilla, and light smoke. Taste of chocolate, smoke, roasted malts, with sweeter black cherry, vanilla, and a bit of tartness in the finish.

750ml bottle acquired in trade with hoppymeal (thanks!). Bottle #219 / 792. Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of black cherries, roast, chocolate, smoke and grape skins. Tastes of black cherries (more than the aromas), chocolate, roast, and vanilla. Chocolate covered cherries. Yet another winner from Shorts!

Originally reviewed January 5, 2008 (rated under the wrong entry). Poured from a 750ml Bottle # 7 of 792. Mysterious Imperial Beer Series #13, known as Imperial Black Cherry Porter. Very clean, soft light roast aroma glows from the glass. A subtle fruitiness punctuates the touches of chocolate, esters and brown sugar. Pours a rather dark mahogany with brilliant purple fringes. Head builds in weak brown leather, quite high. On the palate this beer is a masterpiece of delicate flavor and balance. There’s a wonderful mingling of soft, succulent cherry juice and crisp porter malts. Cereals, cherry juice and cream. Cherry mingles so well with the beer, gliding into the alcohols, yeast character and roast. The porter beneath is deft and delicate. Great stuff all around. A fantastic blend of fruit and beer. Thanks for sharing Sean!

Bottle, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing it. Poured a deep, dark brown with a small brown head. Big sweet aroma of toasted malt, black cherries and chocolate. Reminds me of black cherry ice cream. Big taste of toasted malt, chocolate and a lot of cherry. Hint of tartness at the end. Lingering sharp malt and cherries. Delicious.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a charcoal color with a trim tan head of foam. Smells of sweet black cherries, toasted malt, and powdered cocoa -- amazing. Tastes a step down in complexity, unfortunately, almost like the water content is too high. There’s malt, but it’s not dense. Fine for a porter, but just shy of its potential. Great stuff, regardless.

Bottle 214/792, via my pal hoppymeal, you derek are a god amongst men. Wow what a cool beer. Pours dark black with a thin light brown head that faded from 2 fingers. Nose is full of cherries and dark with big malts and some caramel feeling. Taste is a clear cut rich porter with lots of cherry, its really tasty and overall incredibly well crafted. Gotta say I agree with hopdog, chocolate covered cherries indeed.

give them the who woulda thunk it award... of the crazy combinations at shorts this (as well as the uber guber peanut butter) was a stroke of genius. Cherries where just what you needed for some tart to go with the roast bitterness.

Much thanks to hopdog for breaking out this one to close out a midweek tasting. Pours a deep black with a medium deep tan bubbly head that left some light lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, light smoke, cherries, Flavor was a nice mix of roasted malt, cocoa, some dark chocolate notes, cherries, some tart notes, vanilla and light coffee. What a great flavor on this one!
