Commercial Description:
Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

On tap at Binnys South Loop. Pours a dark amber with a frothy off-white head. Lots of carbonation. Aroma is of caramel, malt, hops, alcohol, and pine. Taste was very hoppy, with pine, caramel, malt, and very slight alcohol. The ’09 version is way more hopped, and has less of a harsh alcohol bite than last year’s. Lingering pine taste. Very drinkable, almost to the point of absurdity. Far too drinkable for a barley wine.

Pours ruby-ish brown with a thin, lasting tan head. Aroma was hoppy with sweet malts. The mouthfeel was creamy..very dry. Bitter hops well balanced with roasty malts. Very dry finish. I’m not a huge fan of barley wines, but I like this one a lot.

Medium sized light tan colored head that leaves great lacing atop this deep amber beer. Sweet hoppy aroma. Bitter grassy flavor on the edges of the tongue and back of the throat. Sweet citrus and light malt notes with a bit or raisins. Smooth light to medium body.

This barley wine has a fruity aroma, true to the style, but for this style has an unusually large amount of piney hops in the aroma. The aroma is quite pleasing. The appearance is beautiful, a combination of ruby red and chestnut brown, clear, white head. The flavor is definitely bittersweet, an upfront mix of caramel, fruit, and citrus hops. The finish has a killer citrus hop bite, which lingers quite a while after swallowing the beer. Again, unusually hoppy for the style, but that kind of works here. A very enjoyable beer.

Bottle. 2009 vintage. Woodsy pineish aroma, slightly sweet with caramel. Hazy dark reddish amber body, small beige head. Delightfully powerful flavor, with piney hops and chewy malt. Moderately sweet, with bitterness in the finish. Fantastic.

2009 edition. Pours a nice red-brown color with a thinner off-white head and the beer has low carbonation. Aroma is a mix of citrus, pine. light alcohol and light malt background as well. Flavor is a nice kick in the mouth of bitterness which takes a few moments for it to be sorted out. The first flavor that appears is a slight citrus which slides into a great pine bitterness. This fades into a slight sweetness from the malt and it finishes with the carrying on of bitterness. The beer is very heavy while the carbonation is fine, lending the feeling of a very thick beer in your mouth. Overall I enjoyed this beer immensely and can’t wait to see how the flavors change with aging.
