Ruby red color, small white head. Brown sugar aroma, sweetish. Grassy hoppy, underlying sweetness. Very American despite of using East Kent Golding. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 2, 2006 Glowing dark coppery brown with a small dark ivory capping of firm foam. Nice lacing in patchy frost glues to the glass. Keeps a good skim of foam always present throughout the session.
Pleasing aroma for a brown, one of the better noses, as most browns usually are pretty boring. This on the other hand is quite forward with a nice round bready tone with a soft browned roastyness, light brown sugar dusting, nuttiness, and some sweet vanilla.
Taste is solid, quite rounded and slow at first, as it takes a bit for the flavors to emerge as the front is easy going with light breadyness. It picks up from there with lots of nice qualities as it comes into the finishing areas with a slight toasted/browned edge. Husks, lightly dried hops with a pinch of citrus dryness, and a slimming vanilla sweetness keep a nice balance as it grabs a bit more breadyness late.
Feel is about medium, but more filling then most other browns as it seems to have bigger carbonation and bolder texture then some of the smoother, maltier browns. This has some nice weight to it. Nicely delicate finish with a feathery dryness floating.
A solid brown by SN. One that you can have more then two of and still have interest to open up some more. Juelze (923), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 2, 2006 Wow, this is good. This is an imbalanced brown ale as it’s not as nutty and malt as most of them. It has the distinct Sierra Nevada take on the style (i.e. over-hopped) which I simply love. It has more hoppier in aromas and taste and the malt is rather subdued. I was pretty impressed by this one. This is an awesome brown ale. jeffc666 (1897), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 2, 2006 Clear(ly) filterd nut brown body toppped by a foamy tan head. The aroma is muted nutty with some EKG herbalness and some citurs. The flavor is quite hoppy, much less sweet and nutty then the typical brown ale, which is why this one is somewhat better than average. Crisp tingly mouthfeel makes you thirst for more. Decent, holds up to high SN standards, just not my style. dwyerpg (2553), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 2, 2006 Very brown ale at the start- malts and malts. Great look. Finish has a little bit of hops and is quite dry and griany. An interesting brown ale, thankfully not nutty, that really grows on you. Beaver (600), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Oct 2, 2006 Updated: Oct 13, 200612 oz bottle. Pours a light tea brown with red highlights. It had a frothy white head that quickly diminishes and leaves a little lacing.
The aroma is sweet doughy malts, some toffee, nuts and tea and a little hoppiness.
The flavor is sweet roasted malts, some nuttiness and tea and a little english hop bitterness and some fruitiness. The mouthfeel is light bodied with some sharp carbonation.
Overall, a decent brown ale, but nothing too exciting. ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA
