Aroma is sweet malt and sour acidity, with some miscellaneous fruit, yeastiness, and spices. Flavor is pretty similar. An odd beer--- bit of sour funkiness, some malt-sweetness mixing with candy sweetness, spices, and estery fruits. Not bad, but not great.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Dec 18, 2009 Tap at Three Floyds awhile back: Brillant reddish brown hue with a frothy head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of light spices, apple and plum, toasted and caramel malts, earthy yeast esters and a grassy hop vapour. The taste has a nice spicy versus malt interplay, quite balanced with some light bitterness and acidity to back it up. There was a very faint salty note that actually work well with the other flavors. This beer was surprisingly refreshing, lively and crisp, hit the spot. Well done and exceeded my expections. garthicus (1309), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 18, 2009 Pours red/brown with a tan head. The aroma is sweet, yeasty and spicy. The flavor is sweet fruit like apple and pear with some spices. It actually reminds me a lot of spiced apple cider. A little syrupy, with a mildly bitter finish. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 23, 2009 Had it on tap at the Pony Bar in NYC. Pretty good beer. Pours a dark brown with a medium head. Nose of yeast and roasted malts. Flavor is interesting: a plethora of fruity notes atop a malty foundation. Slightly sour. Finishes crisp and clean. As a fan of the saison style, I wasn’t impressed with this strange hybrid. It’s like a sour dark hefeweizen with lots of roasty brown ale-type notes, and lots of spice/banana/wheat-yeast characteristics. If it was labeled something other than saison, my brain might stop trying to make sense out of it and therefore enjoy it more. Ehhhhh.... jb (1056), Rochester, New York, USA

Toffee, butterscotch, some sour yeasty notes, I also noted the banana/clove hefe notes, fine by me, as I’m not real sure what the saison style is anyway. Sour palate, complex stuff, nice mouthfeel.
