This is what I think of when I think of big American Ale. Full bodied, but not that big. Lovely malt sweetness followed by full fresh hop blast. The hops define this ale. Balance is lovely as it hides the alcohol nicely. Flavor blast comes on a bit too strong but finishes nicely with a sweet aftertaste. Malts are evident, beautifully so. daknole (2981), Plantation, Florida, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 22, 2008 Nice amber pour, wtih a whtish head. Aroma is citrus, floral and juicy hops. Taste is very hoppy and finish is quite bitter. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 17, 2008 (Bottle, 2007 edition). Spicy hop fragrance. Lovely hazy orange amber color, with light tan head. Tasty hops, but under control, and the citrus is more toward orange rather than the typical IPA grapefruit. An astringent bitter finish goes on forever. A very pleasing IPA. BeerViking (207), Brentford, Greater London, England
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 16, 2008 Updated: Aug 26, 20082007 bottle, found in a local Tesco and served cool not chilled. Dark amber but slightly cloudy, with a big head that soon shrunk, and a peppery and malty nose. On the tongue, there’s a big hoppy attack with a notable spicy overtone - more pepper, maybe cloves, maybe a little cinnamon - and a very bitter aftertaste. Lighter bodied than a winter warmer but still pretty powerful - more of a winter IPA.
Tasted again, this time chilled, the pepper and spice are still there but the malt’s toned down, and the overall effect is somehow both cleaner and more vinous and flavoursome. punkeedo (465), San Antonio, Texas, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 16, 2008 Bottle 2007. Scent is of an old man’s after-shave cologne and the aftertaste matches. Dark reddish brown color with a small cream-colored head. Tastes of light hops with some spices. Full, but muddled palate. Difficult to distinguish the different tastes. Not a bad brew, but not very refreshing. Nik925 (305), California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 11, 2008 Aggressive hop flavor, but the malt more than keeps up. Bitter is kept nicely in check, all around balanced pretty well.
Nothing really wintery/holiday-ish about this one, its just a fine IPA. MitchWayne (264), Kokkola, Finland
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 7, 2008 My favorite Sierra nevada creation, Nicely bitter and hoppy in both smell and taste. I love this stuff, I wish they sold it here. On a side note some random numbskull in a random thread somewhere I have forgotten complained that this was one of the worst holiday brews he has ever tasted because it lacks the holiday spirit. Is that person waiting for Santa claus to come and **** him with a cinnamon **** or something? DarkBeer (47), Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 13/20 | Aug 6, 2008 I’m not sure I realized this was an IPA when I drank it, but I liked the amber hue, the solid head, the hoppy character and the nice clean finish. Pretty good beer.
