Commercial Description:
A mistake was made while brewing the Chico Estate Harvest Pale Ale. Someone accidentally threw a bunch of "non-Chico" and "non-wet" hops into the kettle at start of boil. In order to salvage the batch, Sierra Nevada ended up boiling the wort longer to get a higher OG. Then they used a lot of Yakima Valley hops later in the boil and for dry hopping to make a double IPA.

Pours copper with a thin off white head. Smells of resin, spicy. Tastes Citrussy, resiny, spicy, perfumy. Straight forward and amped up version of most of thier standard IPAs.

Draft at SN tasting at Olives. Poured clear daek copper color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy sour citrus and floral hop aroma. Medium body with slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy smooth bitter hoppy flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a good beer that was better then my expectations.

Draft notes from DRE. Pours deep coppery with off-white head. Nose is resiny hops, tropical citrus. Tastes hoppy, resiny, with tangerine and pineapple notes, solid malt, floral and peppery notes, and a crisp finish. A very good IPA.

Tasted on tap at the Bistro Double IPA Festival on 2/7/2009. This Imperial IPA pours an orange gold color from the firkin. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet with a touch of floral hops. A medium bodied double IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are floral and citrusy. Soft carbonation. Nice balance. Nice floral and orange flavors. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Tap at the Grey Lodge. Pours a translucent amber with a creamy off white head that left some lacing. Aroma of nice floral and citrusy hops, caramel and nuts. Flavor of the same. REally nice hop flavor and aroma. On the dry side too, which I liked since it really helped bring out the hop flavor! The title on this beer can probably lose the "firkin" since SN kegged up a bunch of this.

5/06/2009: Sierra Nevada Chico IPA has a clear copper color with a puffy, off-white to yellowish head that produces thick lacing. The aroma has sugary toffee and grapefruit peel. The flavor reminds me of an intense Torpedo Ale with a bit more maltiness and a slightly caramelized flavor. Similar to the Torpedo Ale, this beer has a very long, hoppy finish that is filled with pithy, bitter orange flavor that stays with you for quite some time. Overall this beer is still well-balanced and very drinkable. Killer finish!

Pint (draught; 7.9% ABV) at the Sierra Nevada Artisan Ale Experience at Olives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rating #14 for this beer.
