Commercial Description:
Limb & Life is a companion to the big beer-an acorn off the larger tree. (Life & Limb) It is a 5% ABV small beer-a low-gravity beer made using the residual sugar as “second runnings” from the first larger brew, fortified with American hops. This is a session beer.

On Tap @ DFH Rehoboth beer premier event-Clear black cola like pour w/a slight tan head. Slight malt aroma. Weak flavors of floral hops & malt, some caramel, some bread dough...some interest. Considering all the hoopla they put on for this brew, & the fact that it sold out in 28 minutes...it was really just very average. Not bad, just bland. It tasted like a "second runnings" beer made from left over hops; very weak brew. I enjoyed the Licorice Infused Chicory Stout Cask they had on that night a lot more. I hope the Life & Limb is better-it will certainly be stronger @ 10%; lets see if that translates over to better flavor.

On tap at PP Carlsbad. Dark amber/brown pour, frothy off-white head. Hops, grapefruit, some herbal grassy notes, and nutty malt. Decent, not great.

Pours brown with an off white head. Aroma is piny, birchy aroma with a little bit of malt. Flavor is piny birchy syrupy flavor with a little bit of citrusy and earthy hops. Not bad.

Tap at Rattle N Hum. Deep amber pour with a tight creamy white head. The nose is quite hoppy with a lot of lightly fruity piny hops. A fairly distinct grassiness with a kiss of balsam and juniper. Moderate bitterness but the hops come across a little bit soapy, unfortunately. It’s not overly distracting, but it’s there. Moderate bitterness with a tiny bit of grapefruit and caramel as well. It has a kiss of astringency on the back, but I don’t really mind that either. It’s fairly unusual and it’s pleasant enough, but it’s not mind-blowing.

On tap at Crescent Moon. It poured amber with a dirty off white head. Aroma was a sour bread with some resin. Flavor was pretty generic. Kind of earthy with some sweet vanilla. It seems right that this was made with the remains of another. It seems to be lacking a robust flavorful quality I was hoping for.

Yumminess. This sibling us life and lip is delicious. Nicely hopped to give it it’s own flavor. Appreciated the smooth palate, grassy nose, dark color with ruby highlights and poofy cream color head

On tap at Falling Rock poured a clear reddish brown with a lasting beige head and good lacing. Aromas of burnt carmel, toffee, wood, light maple and light spice. Palate was light bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of toffee, burnt carmel, wood and a hint of spice with a smooth dry malty finish.

On tap @ Papago. Really solid, sessionable brown ale. Mahogany pour with a fizzy eggshell head that doesn’t leave significant lacing. Aroma is cocoa, brown sugar, and biscuit. Flavor shows honey, chocolate, and a slight coffee finish. Medium mouthfeel with ample carbonation. Good.

Sampled on draft at Capone’s on 11/28/09. Pours a very dark burgundy/chestnut brown color with bright mahogany edges and a one finger frothy off-white head that quickly dissipates into a lasting cap that leaves sheets of lacing behind. Sweet caramel malt aroma with some sweet apple character. syrup and subtle cinnamon spice. Very funky(in a foul kind of way) and earthy with a lot of astringent alcohol flavor. When I say earthy I mean that it tastes like freshly toiled earth, soil like with dirt pitched in. This nasty flavor is accompanied by an unpleasant spiciness and the body is very watered down. Pretty gross overall. I hope the Life and Limb is better.
