Commercial Description:
Our ESB blends the best of English tradition with the boldness of West Coast style. A blend of malts featuring British-grown Maris Otter is balanced with the earthy spiciness of hand-selected English and US hops. The ale is left unfiltered which enhances mouthfeel and hop aroma creating a slightly reddish copper hue.

Burnt copper pour with a solid 1-inch eggshell foam. Aroma is floral, earthy, and citrusy. Quite hoppy with underlying malt backbone...caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. Medium mouthfeel. Not bad.

Bottle. Pours copper-red with a foamy off-white head that lasts for a bit. Nice hop aroma - a bit IPA like, but definitely some English hops in there. Caramel malty flavor with a good balance of hops mixed in. Not bad.

12 oz bottle from Thriftway - This beer is a very nice surprise. It is a fantastic ESB with a good hoppy flavor. Almost an IPA, I would say, but not quite.

Overall, another quality product from this brewer. Nose is not too c-hoppy, but more subtle european hops. Flavor is great, blend of malts and hops to satisfy lovers of both malt and hops. Quality.

Sampled at the Impromptu Butter’s 5th cellar clearance. Clear amber pour, wispy white head. Massive malt caramel aroma reminiscent of a barlywine. Flavor is much the same with lingering hop bitterness. 2008 bottle is a year old, but not that bad.

2008 bottle. Pours a lacing, off-white head with a amber body with golden highlights. Smells of mellow hops and barley. Reminds me of a barleywine in aroma. Tastes of caramel, apricot, and smooth malt. Great head but the mouthfeel was a bit thin. Mellow hop and caramel after-taste. Makes me think of a low grav barleywine.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Sierra Nevada. Across the lineup, they make excellent and consistent beers. The ESB is no different. Pours to a straw color with a reasonably sized head. Nothing overwhelming. Like other SIerra Nevada beers, it’s very balanced. Begins with some nice bready/yeasty flavor. There’s a bit of fruit flavor after that -- think grapefruit -- but nothing significant. Some good lingering sweetness that isn’t overwhelmed by excessive hoppiness. Great macro that could be enjoyed everyday with a variety of foods, or by itself.
