ElGaucho (1719), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Feb 21, 2008 Draft at Acadia Cafe, Minneapolis. Lagerish aroma; not much there. Hazy amber body with some visible carbonation. Some lace. Not much head retention. Initial impression is doughy. I’ll preface that I had a Furthermore Knot Stock just prior which has a pretty good punch of pepper, orange rind and ginger. So, my palate had some adjusting to do. The familiar Sierra Nevada yeast strain is not evident. You’d have to be an idiot savant to guess this was a Sierra Nevada brew if you were drinking it blind folded. I found the brew underbittered initially, but as my palate adjusted to the brew, it became more and more characteristic of a true ESB. Settles into the style ok, but my overall impression is that Sierra Nevada should be able to do better with this style. A disappointing effort, albeit with a drinkable result.
checkmatei1 (215), Willow Grove, USA Jul 16, 2008 Draft: Poured an orange color with not much head. The aroma was of pine citrus and hops. The flavor was a little bit extra, a little bit special and a little bit bitter. Overall, a decent beer that reminds me more of a double IPA and ESB, but good. HenrikSoegaard (2897), Randers, Denmark Jul 16, 2008 Bottle. Creamy off-white good fully lasting head. Dark yellow colour. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. Slightly grassy. Moderate bitter flavor. Average moderate bitter finish.Oily palate. Nice ESB. DA (2261), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Jul 14, 2008 From the bottle pours soft golden amber with a small white head. Toasty cereal notes up front, soft chocolate and some citrus and tropical fruit to the hops. Finish is earthy but crisp, with a dry bready flavor that sits back under the hops. Quietman (149), Florida, USA Jul 12, 2008 Orange amber,hazy.Off-white head.Very nice aroma.Pine, some citrus fruit, caramel.Sweet flavor first then a good follow up of bitterness and a mild tart sourness.Lingering bitter sweet finish.Medium body. RollinHard (502), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Jul 10, 2008 Pours burnt orange, hazy, with an off-white head. Aroma-nice but subtle white chocolate, bread, caramel, old citrus. Tastes of tart citrus, wood, pine, light caramel and white bread. Finishes toasty, with citrus and a charred wood aftertaste. Drinkable and decent, but Sierra Nevada can brew this type of beer in their sleep.
