Bottle into Sam Adams Lager glass. Pours dark brown bordering on black, bleeding into red brown from the edges inward, and with a thin tan head that quickly dissolves into a ring around the outside edge and an island of small tan bubbles. Big roasty nose, some coffee, with a bright, slightly acidic hop bite underneath. Taste is fairly straightforward - roasty malt with notes of coffee and cocoa, coupled with a sharp, acidic, lightly bitter hop presence. Finish is a lingering soft bitterness, along with remnants of the sharp roastiness, and a slight metallic note. Sharp carbonation bite up front, trailing off into a softer bite towards the end, medium body.

Bottle from Ernie’s Liquors in Palo Alto. Pours black with a nice tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, milk chocolate, and a little alcohol. Flavor is mostly roasted malt, some coffee, a little smoke, and a California common-like character. Flavor not quite as sharp as I’d like, but it’s rather tasty. Medium mouthfeel.

A nice roasted flavor is present, can taste the Chocolate malts and the willamette hops. sums up what a porter should be. I have had better and worse, but I would put this on the upper half of my list o’ porters.

Honey malt aroma with a little skank. Bubbly little head. Flavor of molasses, coffee, and herbs, with a little Coca Cola too. Not very sharp or smoky for a porter. A little light for the style. Not bad, but I was hoping for better from Sierra Nevada.

Bottle. I love this porter. Pours black as it should, long-lasting thin lacing. Flavor and aroma both in the roasted coffee realm. Real nice...

Not good, or even great. Not a drain pour though. The nose is off, a little hoppy and more of a bottle smell than anything else. Very thin body, not much sweet, a little too carbonated. Missing some sort of flavor. Really not a good beer. Doesn’t hold a candle to Bell’s or Smuttynose. Rerate: Better this time, a bit, but the body is so thin it’s hard to enkoy.
