LIghtly roasted barley, chocolate, and molasses. Slight hint of hops. Medium bodied with a high drinkability for a porter. Creamy texture in the mouth with a clean finish. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 13, 2007 One of the best porters in the country that is notable for its balance. Not much black patent apparent to me, just great flavors arising from chocolate and crystal malts. Nice body, great hop balance, enough body to please. Oh, since this has been brewed many porters have been brewed in the US that have tried to outclass this and Anchor’s porters, but I always find myself reaching for one of these two when I want an honest to goodness American porter. Side by sides of these two never leave me with one clear winner ... I like them both. scrizzz (1347), kirkland, Washington, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 10, 2007 dark brown to the light looks black without the bulb. less than 1 inch dirty white head disappeared quickly. ground coffee and black bread aroma. very tasty. theres texture to the sip and just as fresh roasted coffee and raw chocolate have bitter sides, so does this beer. the coffee notes are subtle and refreshing. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 6, 2007 Nutty dark roasted barly aroma. Appearance is a bit weak as the color is a bit light. Flavor of coffee, burnt toffee, and a bit of nut. Overall flavor is straight forward and balanced. Has a real nice mouthfeel, almost chewy (quite the supprise considering how light this porter is). Overall, worth having again. I especially enjoyed the nutty quality of this porter. Veer (355), Landskrona, Sweden
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 5, 2007 Aroma: formidable, dried fruit... smoky (game), fresh hops... dried red berries. Hard to place, sourish cocoa...
Flavour: good, nutty, ancient, burnt... not bad at all. Sweet, perhaps not as full-bodied as one would expect. Nutty, sourish-sweet aftertaste. Bitter-hops.
Palate: watery, but not bad at all.
Appearance: very dark reddish brown, clear. Brownish head w/ lacings. DuffMan (2786), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 3, 2007 Dark brown, a hint of gold rims the ede when transilluminated. Dense almond head, compact, and longlasting. Chocolate, cream, espresso and clay are all in the nose. Velvety smooth mouthfeel, chocolatey and malty, some coffee roast, some faint stewed fruits, and a clay-like earthinesss in the finish. Soft and silky, subtle and perfectly put together. Fantastic! xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Dec 3, 2007 Sample at WLV. Dark brown to black opaque color with small light tan head. Not much going on in the aroma, sort of tired roast malt. Flavor was grainy and mild roast with only the slightest hint of smoke up front. Thin body but well carbonated. A pretty boring porter.
