mcjay (73), Neenah, Wisconsin, USA Oct 4, 2008 Deep amber color, almost black with a very nice, thick tan/brown head. Rich, roasted aroma with a hint of chocolate. Robust and bitter taste with a hoppy bite to it. JCastner (38), New York, USA Oct 3, 2008 Pours black with a slight off white head. Aroma is all roasted coffee. Medium body with dry lingering bitterness. Simple and straightforward. Petrucci914 (372), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Oct 3, 2008 Pours a pitch black with a medium mocha head that leaves webs of lacing. Aroma is robust - hoppy, alcohol, dark roasts, coffee. Taste is the same with a slightly bitter finish. Nicely balanced and enjoyable stout. BeerBelcher (744), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Sep 30, 2008 I drank a fair amount of craft beer in the mid-1990’s...then (like a lot of people) I stopped drinking it for a few years, and then started again in the early 2000s. And between these two periods of craft beer growth, there seems to be a marked difference in the types of beers that are popular. This beer strikes me as one that would’ve been exotic in the first craft beer explosion, but seems downright boring to me in the second (and current) expansion.
Pours a thin dark brown. Aroma is very faint, with a hint of smoke and a touch of roastiness. Flavor offers a bit of roastiness, but is also extremely mild. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery. This is not a beer to get real worked up about.
I would weakly recommend this beer.
I bought this bottle at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. hombrepalo (498), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 23, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Dark black color with a thin tan head. Aroma is mainly smokey malts, chocolate and a subtle hint of sweetness that I really couldn’t identify. Interesting taste... rather thick and chewy with a nice malty beginning and a roasty middle, but the end had some sort of odd sweetness to it... possibly the same sweetness that was in the aroma. It wasn’t bad tasting, it was just different.
