Outrageously tall and frothy brown head. Nose is fruitier than expected along with a pleasant roasted character and lighter chocolate notes. Taste is chocolate, bitter coffee and a decent hop background. The palate is full but a bit acidic and bitter. There’s a weird tartness to it but maybe I’m confusing this as a sharpness derived from the hops. It finishes with more of the tartness and is a very quick and semi-dry end. Light bitter coffee and hops. Faint bits of cocoa remain. Good beer! ¾ (4999), Colorado, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 23, 2004 Deep brown, almost black, with a creamy brown head. sharp, sweet flavor of chocolate chips, some sweet buttery malts, sweet chemical and acetone nose... like paint thinner. Syrupy, long lasting chocolate finish. ClarkVV (3578), Allston, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 26, 2004 2003 bottle. Pours a dark mahogany/chestnust brown, with some darker black tinges. Small off-tan head. Dosent seem heavily filtered but no sediment in the bottom. Smells of tangy hops, black malt, molasses and cocoa. Flavor is very bittersweet. Like sweet and sour sauce with some light chocolate, a touch of roasted malt. Body is medium-full. High amount of acidity and just too much tanginess for me. No huge complexity it seems, just that tangy/bittersweetness. Some black and roasted malt in there, a touch of bitter hops dosent help the already acidic situation. Certainly a world better than the cloying aldaris porteris, but I would never drink this over a zywiec or sinybrychoff. duff (5475), Surrey, Greater London, England

I don’t think these guys know how to brew bad beer, becuase this was another gem. Deep brown in colour. Toasty caramel and some light chocolate to start, with good length and acidity on the finish, full bodied, with a bit of guts, i really liked this beer. Alcoholist (570), Peoria, Illinois, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 31, 2004 I can easily compare this to Heavyweight’s Perkunos Hammer and say it’s close but no cigar. Nice lacing all the way through and a big, tan head. Close, but not quite Hammer status on the roasted malt and chocolate flavor. Very good, indeed. Silphium (2144), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 30, 2004 Pours a very deep, ruddy red-brown, topped by a medium tan head. Aroma of cocoa, toast, and licorice with a hint of acidity/wet socks. Gasspasser is right- the flavor is quite sour, with tangy, roasted, toasty malt dominating the palate. I’m not turned off by the lactic, tart aspect of the beer, but I understand why it is a bit "much" for some reviewers. Overall a good beer. SubstanceT (1090), Saint Louis, Missouri, USA
