Wonderful aroma of molasses, some chocolate notes, currents, nutty. A vertiable bouquet. Ah, but the taste. Fell short. Mediocre body and flavor. A delight to the nose but a disappointment to the taste buds. Hoppy. Biting. Decent but not exceptional. CaptainCougar (5534), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | May 16, 2004 Pours a thick rich dark brown with a huge puffy tan head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, lightly roasted malt and a hint of tartness. Starts semi-sweet, with some dark fruitiness before turning quite sour and acidic. Mild chocolate and lingering roasted malt finish once the tartness subsides. Would make for a real nice beer were it not so sour. Thanks anyway to TChrome for the chance to try this! The aroma is very chocolaty..roasted malts..very enticing indeed.
the beer is a dark porter brown with a small yet clinging tan head..good lacing.
lovelly flavour..mostly chocoalte ..dark unsweetned chocolate..coffee aftertaste , some bitterness..some hops detectable..slightly smokey.
Feels very smooth and easy going on the palate.
Overall a very good porter..another good beer from this Oregon Coast range brewery. BBB63 (4274), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 9, 2004 Dark brown hue with some reddish highlights that produces a big creamy tan head and very good lace. The aroma hints of malted chocolate, plums, currents, floral and lightly piney hops, smoky, and zesty yeast esters. The taste starts nutty and malty, lots of bittersweet mocha tones. Additional acidic fruit and touch of caramel nature adds depth. The finish displays a coffee, smoky, and yeasty twang; lingering bitterness. The mouthfeel is very lively, crisp, and aggressive. Another hoppy porter for sure but different than say Alpha Klaus, more acidic and sour than piney. All in all, recommended, if just for a unique tasting. Thanks Joe for the bottle. xsketchyx (184), Oregon, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 26, 2004 Siletz is a little-known brewery from a town just outside of Newport, OR. Given that Newport is where Rogue is located and the fact that, from what I understand, the brewer at Siletz cut his teeth working at Rogue, it's not hard to guess that their beers are going to be substantial to say the least.
Silk screened bomber bottle. Here's the blurb: "...is a rich malty porter with more of everything. A Generous blend of malted barley creates a veritable orgy of roasted and chocolate malt flavor, blanaced with the finest NW hops. A beer fit to serv an Emperor. Tan smooth and chocolatey for a stout, too big for a mere porter ... Serve with your favorite bold entrees or just relax and enjoy it alone." Oh, brewed and bottled by Renegade Brewing Company. Onward.
Pours a jet black with a beautiful *large* head that stays around as long as the beer does leaving a very intracate lace down the glass.
Smells quite strong. You can actually smell the alcohol, I think. Lots of sweet malt and, of course, floral hops.
The taste is not for the weak of heart. This is more stout than most stouts. It's at least as strong as most of what Stone puts out, if that tells you anything. Very malty and *quite* hoppy. Cascades are definatly swimming around as I notice the grapefruit taste. I'd love to know the IBU of this thing if the scale goes up that high. But it's amazingly well balanced in that it's not making my jaw ache from the "bitter beer face." Or maybe I've been living in the PNW for too long that I've become immune... < smirk >
Mouthfeel is quite full and cleansing, although the drinkability drops just a bit from the aftertaste I'm getting from the cascade hops.
I'm craving a really strong cigar right now to go with the second half of the bottle. This ain't no session beer.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 8, 2004 Aroma is decently malty but a bit restrained. Notes of smoke, and grain. Appearanc eis very attractive medium brown with nice big head that is fully retained. Flavor gets better. Flavors of malt, chocolate, and some serious smoke in the finish make this a good porter. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 23, 2003 Very dark brown/black, thick tan head. I picked up the chocolate in the aroma and the flavor immediately. However, it is nicely balanced by the roasty-ness of the beer. The aftertaste is slightly bitter. Slightly thick mouthfeel, appropriate for the style.
