opaque brown, wispy tan head, dry powdered chocolate aroma, rich chocolate flavor, a distracting twang with light tartness destroies what should be a great beer

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 15, 2006 Very dark brown. There is a bit of lactic twang in the aroma but otherwise it’s chocolate syrup. The flavour is likewise a one-dimensional chocolate syrup thing, overwhelming the underlying brew. argo0 (7011), Washington DC, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 10, 2005 (22oz bottle) Dark brown body with minimal tan head. Aroma is medium sweet, chocolate, light pine. Taste is medium sweet, milk chocolate, malted milk balls, light earthy/pine. Smooth, watery medium body with low carbonation. Not bad, but there are definitely better chocolate beers out there. bu11zeye (5675), Frisco, Texas, USA

| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 2/10 | 3/5 | 6/20 | Dec 2, 2005 22oz bottle acquired in trade with DarkElf (thanks!). Poured dark brown (almost black) with an averaged sized tan head. Aromas of cocoa, roasted malts, nuts and light coffee. What was up with the taste. All I got was sour and tart. I would have suspected a bad bottle, but I read other raters who mention sour. CaptainCougar (5532), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 11, 2007 22oz bottle: Pours a nearly opaque dark brown with a wispy, thin-lacing tan head. Has a roasty malty, milk chocolatey aroma with a touch of light fruity tartness. Body starts somewhat thin and over-attenuated, with some roasty dark chocolatey notes and some sour tartness with a nice chocolatey finish. Unfortunately infected, but would otherwise make for a pretty good porter. ¾ (5009), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 6, 2005 22oz bottle. Up front it’s fizzy, sweet, boring and a little bland. Slightly chocolate but not deep by any meands. When warmed for a little bit it opens, as it should, and there are more prevalent rich textures and deeper flavors: creamy chocolate cake, bakers chocolate with a good hefty bitterness, and some slightly sweet plum notes as well. However, but the end of a big bottle of this, I’m worn out, there’s too much chocolate, and that’s all it is at that point. Similar to Rogue Chocolate Stout in some respects, but not as well balanced with the chocolate. I do believe that this beer is overrated. BückDich (4857), McCall, Idaho, USA

Nose of rice crispies (marshmallows) & malted milk balls, very chocolaty. The flavor is dry & full of cocoa, tastes like hot chocolate, exactly but with marshmallows in it. Finishes sweet & tangy. Good f’in porter.<P>ReRate from a Bottle: Light carbonation, fruity nose, tart flavor with a shadow of chocolate. Wow, this has gone downhill. Old score: 9-4-9-3-17
