It’s stil too sweet, but the oak aging has given it much more character and together with the alcohol it feels almost whiskey-like. Not very refined, but I find myself enjoying it. kp (8500), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

Tasted side by side with the Barrel Aged version so notes will reflect the side by side tasting. Both versions poured a medium mahogany with a small sized off white head. The BA version was cloudy with the regular version being clear. They both had an earthy, peaty and caramel aroma (stronger in the BA) with the BA also possesing the expected aromas of vanilla, wood, and also a smokiness. The overall aromas of the regular were on the softer and subtle side. They both shared tastes of nuts, caramel, and earthiness. The BA also had wood, vanilla, smoke, and citrus. Overall the BA was more complex and enjoyable. CaptainCougar (5526), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 24, 2006 Pours a transparent dark copper mahogany with a thin tan head. Nice bourbon oaky and sweet caramel malty aroma has some vanilla and mild peat. Body starts with sweet peaty caramel toffee well balanced with a nice bourbon oaky complexity toward a dry bittersweet finish. A unique and well-brewed beer. BückDich (4857), McCall, Idaho, USA

Nose of cinnamon and toasted malts. The flavor is creamy with a large malty body and plenty of dark fruits. The finish is a bit salty but it has a nice contrast to the rest of the beer. Poured a clear dark brown color with a moderate fizzy brown head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Medium toasted malt, wood and earthy scotch aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy bourbon sweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration.
A smooth complex drinkable brew. BBB63 (4267), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Aug 22, 2009 Bottle and served in a snifter: Murky reddish brown with a initial large fizzy head but fades to a small ring of bubbles and left little lace. The aroma has notes of rich toffee and vanilla malts, marzipan, faint woody smoke, herbal grassiness and some dark fruits. The taste is surprisingly muddled with some dark fruits upfront and a layer of discombobulated sweet malts. This Scotch Ale has neither the pungent kick in the arse of peat or iodine... nor the bite of smoky scotch whisky. It simply just lays flat against the palate, too much vanilla and caramel overtones... Perhaps I got a bad bottle or maybe it is just me tonight but I found this to be one highly overrated beer. Bourbony aroma with a large amoutn of coconut, some vanilla and bubble gum. Roasty malt underneath. Sweet toasty malt flavor. With caramel and bourbon that runs from middle to finish. Pretty tasty.
