Commercial Description:
A deep brown/red color, moderately sweet and satisfying ale with a rich malty flavor derived from roasted and aromatic specialty malts, enhanced by the distinctive aroma of Pacific Northwest Cascade hops.Slightly less ‘heavy’ than traditional porter-style ale, Pick Axe Porter is surprisingly refreshing for a beer of its dark color

Black but not opaque. Tan head. Big roasty nose. Coffee, toffee, grass. Lighter than stout but creamy, slightly soapy.

Porters - sometimes I don't know what to expect - especially for the palate - will it be thin and prickly or vinous? Well this one is Creamy - very full flavored and soft. Lightly roasted, sweet milk chocolate with a shorter dry hop finish. Deep brown with light tan head, excellent lacing.

Deep brwon with reddish highlights and a creamy tan head and very good lacing. The aroma hints of cashews, roasted cark malts, aromatic and grassy hops, dusty yeast esters, light milk chocolate and coffee. The taste is malty with a good dose of pine and bitterness undertones. Coffee and smoky notes detected on the finish. The mouthfeel is a tad thin, lively and smooth. A touch astringent as well. Overall a very nice porter with a bit more body could have been a palate killer.

The Silver Gulch Brewing Company is located in Fairbanks, Alaska and produces some very good beers that rival those of the Midnight Sun Brewing Company and the Alaskan Brewing Company. This one is no exception.

Sometimes, especially in the summer, and at social gatherings, porters can be too much. Not the case for this mild well balanced kindof sweet porter. This is a surprising beer, as many of the Silver Gulch offerings are not well balanced (but see the Fairbanks Lager). I had this a couple fo nights ago, so I don’t remember all of the details, but I would drink it again. Re-rate almost two years later, and I agree completely. Very easy going, let’s say a summer-weight porter. Glad I had this in Panama.
