A smallish off-white cover gathers atop the brick coloured body. Fruity brown sugar/toffee coated aromas emanate from this toasty offering. Grainy. Even fruitier in mouth than the nose had promised. Apricot notes are the most obvious to me, both with their juicy sweetness and their gentle tartness. It’s more complex than that though, I can easily imagine red cherries or unfiltered apple juice in there. In the finish, herbal and leafy hops bring about their soft bitterness, not quite cutting through the sweetness. The body remains tight, light in size and punctuated by delicate, medium-sized bubbles which never bite. From a 6.8% beer with a relatively light body, you’d expect much better than average drinkability, but the malts are sweet with their candied dried fruits components and this limitates this quality.

341ml bottle. Pours clear amber with a small brown head. Nose is malty and hoppy. Some spices and caramel. Taste is malty, some caramel and spices. Finish is a bit of butterscotch, quite sweet and a bit hoppy. Notes of wood, oak and roasted malt. Alcohol quite discrete. Deception.

Bottle - 341ml. Superb hazy brown body with a lasting beige foamy head. Well balanced malty/hoppy aroma with woody and brown sugar hints. Taste is dominated by hoppiness and oaky notes. Ends with a decent bittersweet finish. Average Altbier.

Nice amber coloured body with bright ruby highlights, some copper tint and a good, thick two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of malt, caramel, nuts, vanilla and a touch of spice - not much though. Medium-bodied; Spicey flavour up front with a lot of caramel, a showing of alcohol and nuts and a mild yet potent bitterness. Aftertaste has a lot of unrefined sugars and roastiness on the palate along with alcohol and yeast as well. Overall, not such a great beer, but not absolutely horrible either. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia (I never saw this in Montreal) on 02-October-2009 sampled at home in Washington on 29-October-2009.

341 ml Bottle. Dark brown with a medium creamy off white head with good retention and average lacing. Aroma is dense dark malt, caramel and toffee with a bit of hops. Flavor is dark malt, toffee, metal, brown sugar, and a slight touch of hops in the final. Medium body with fizzy carbonation. Alcohol is barely noticeable.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color alt with a nice large foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of malt is pretty intense with caramel coming out and nice toffee notes. Taste is characterized by loads of caramel malt with notes of toffee – very good balance between a session beer and a more extreme version of an original German Alt. Body is fuller then most example of the style with good carbonation and no signs of alcohol. Well done.

Cloudy amber pour with a thick, creamy, beige head. Pleasant aroma of hops, toasted malt, fruits and butterscotch, there’s also a mild woody or smoky feeling in there. The flavor is interesting, the hops are present, but not dominating, there’s toasted malt, fruits and butterscotch. The butterscotch is milder in the flavor than in the aroma.

341ml Bottle: Faint aroma of malts, slight raisins, slight rum-soaked raisins, and a slight hint of caramel. Poured deep amber/copper in color with a tiny, tan head that disappeared very quickly. Hazy. Sparkling. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of malts, nuts, light grains, light wood, slight fruit, and slight fig. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malt, wood, and nut finish is slightly dry.

341 mL bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy reddish brown color with a moderate creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee, grain, leafy hops, sawdust. Taste is bitter malts, smoke, nuttiness, caramel and a metallic finish. Some faintly bitter hop notes as well. Smooth, creamy, med-full bodied. Interesting beer.
