Frankly, the bottled version is softer, more flavorful, more enjoyable. Toasty up front, very chocolaty in the finish. Whatever I was getting that reminded me of pepper surely isn’t evoking the same response this time. Some sourness, moderate earthiness, and the roast and bitterness all have their say with each sip as well. Toast, malty, and much less sourness in the nose, but not much of the chocolate that is featured in the flavor. Medium bodied, but like on draft, this porter just seems too thin for the style. Mahogany still seems accurate as a color descriptor, but the tan head pours very small, almost filmy, and dissipates fairly quickly. Still not a great porter, but for the most part, it’s fairly enjoyable.
05-Aug-05 (Draft: Six Rivers Brewery in McKinleyville, CA) Roasty and mildly bitter, this porter is distinguished by a prominent, up front pepper flavor and a pleasant chocolate finish. It’s fairly dry in flavor and mouthfeel. Though it’s medium in body, it’s a bit thinner than I’d like in a porter. Mahogany color is actually a shade darker than their stout. Tan head retains a modest but complete layer over the beer, and leaves behind some patchy lacing. Interesting and somewhat unique, but unremarkable.
