A “Big Bird” by any measure! This years Trumpeter is a huge beer with rich layers of smoke, chocolate, roast, caramel, jet fuel, motor oil and hops. Blowing above 10% abv, this bird should walk not fly.

Bottle. Black, thin tan head. Licorice, alcohol, molasses, some lesser roast aromas. Too much solvent character on aroma. Taste is more roasty than the aroma, but mild licorice and molasses taste are there also. Decent, but the alcohol takes over a bit too much.

Pours a dark black brew that allows light through the pour. I coaxed a one finger creamy tan head. The nose is sweet, chocolaty, alcohol shows, molasses, some hop profile. The flavor is harsh, alcohol, molasses, rich, malty, sweet, astringent. The palate is hot and astringent, thick.

Pours a deep dark black with a medium off white head. Aroma is medium sweet with caramel, molasses, licorice and roasted barley. Flavor has more of a malt component and more subtle molasses and nice bitterness. Large bodied, thick chewy texture. Finishes long and sweet.

Handbottle from Enniskillen; Nose of chocolate, roastiness, very light smokiness, and ligh flowery hops; clear very dark brown with a small cinnamon-tan head; flavor is light hop bitterness, lots of chocolate, caramel, oakiness, and some alcohol. Finish is light alcohol and bitterness. Pretty good shit.

The beer pours an opaque black with a thin brown head that is mostly lasting. The nose is a rich mix of dark fruit, burnt sugar, sweet malts, caramel and wood. The taste was a deep mix of acidy balanced with sweet notes and a smoke overtone, you can get a flavor of dark stone fruit, caramel, smoke and oak. The mouth feel is deep and rich. Overall a good beer.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a tall, khaki-colored head. Smell: Rich malty nose with notes of milk chocolate candies, dark caramel, flaked barley, and sweet licorice. Taste: Smokey dark maltiness with tastes of chocolate and caramel. Chewy sweetness. A spadeful of top soil. A spicy, earthy bitterness that’s a touch acrid latches on a pulls you away from the heavy malts for a moment before returning you for the bittersweet chocolate, smoked anise finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: Not bad, Skagit. A respectable imperial stout.
