Commercial Description:
Ruby red in colour, this all malt ale is brewed from a combination of roasted barley malts and English aroma hops. Smooth in taste. The hopping is generous but not bitter and has a unique flavour that has become a trademark for Sleeman.

NOTE: Known as "Sleeman Original Dark 50* Amber Ale" in the US.

This beer looks darker than the honey-borwn, but not exactly dark if you know what I mean. Not much head and little to now lacing. Aroma is kind of nutty with some kind of malt. Taste is OK even though some may find it too sweet. Too watery however. You can do better than this in Ontario, but a decent addition to Newfoundland stores.

Disapointing for a "Dark" Lager, Brown/clean pour, slight head,a little nutty crisp finish.refreshing, but I need more flavor for $7.99 a SIX.

Dark honey amber colored clear liquid. Moderately persistant taupe head. Nose is of decently malted barley with a little sharp hint. First sip is a little sweet with a fairly decent malt body. Texture is thin and fluid. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slightly nutty. Second sip, some sweetness rounds out the flavor. A decent beer.

In general, Sleeman seems to use ok malt, hops and water but most likely also uses "unannounced" flavor enhancers such as sugar. This was the worst of the sampler pack (cream ale, original dark & honey brown lager), possessing one of the most cloying mouthfeels I’ve ever come across. Malt tries to show through but it seems stifled by sugar and/or chemicals.

This beer is a clear brown color with a thin light beige head. Very thin lacing also. Light malt and nuts in the nose. Light-bodied and a little sweet, with some malt flavor along with a touch of hops. What little flavor that is present gives up the ghose pretty quickly though. The finish is clean and lightly hoppy but that falls off just as fast. Decent for very brief periods.

Bottle: Poured a clear light dark beer with no head and minimal carbonation. Aroma is quite weak with some roasted malt being noticeable. Taste is also sub par with a watery feeling ruining the whole thing.

Average tasting lager with a bad finish. Too pricey for the taste. Go with a yuengling instead.
