Commercial Description:
Ruby red in colour, this all malt ale is brewed from a combination of roasted barley malts and English aroma hops. Smooth in taste. The hopping is generous but not bitter and has a unique flavour that has become a trademark for Sleeman.

NOTE: Known as "Sleeman Original Dark 50* Amber Ale" in the US.

Maybe it was dark in the "deep well" where they got the water to brew this but it certainly was not dark in my glass...but I guess that dark is a relative term. Flavor is smoothly water-like with a hint of malt. I suspect that no hops were harmed in the brewing of this beer.

This didn’t really seem like a dark beer at all. Certainly drinkable but was amber color, modest aroma, slightly hoppy and slight sweet and malty taste, not near enough going on in the taste department for a dark. Agree that it is a macro-style dark and not the best of Sleeman’s. - Had this again at the Rochester Rohrbach’s beer fest and had the rating marked the same - 2.7 with similar comments.

3rd style(and least favorite) that was included in the Sleeman variety pack. Clear bottle, dark beer, little hoppy, it was ok.

Bottle. Dark root beer. Nice head. Very light toasty nose, minimal caramel flavors; fairly full-bodied, not really bad at all.

This was not really that good. It was a typical dark macro lager, similar to Michelob Amber Bock. I would maybe drink this again, but it would not be my first choice my any means.

Bland aroma of caramel and light hops. Browned-copper colour with white head that diminishes to a light cover and ring. Caramel malt and definitely not bit as promised. Flavour is short. Easy drinking light body with decent carbonation. Bottle (clear).

Very nice copper body topped with an average off-white head. Skunky aroma with caramel and malty hints. Although its attack is vigorous and bitter, taste in itself is overcarbonated and sort of watery. Final is short and discreet. This is the kind of stuff that gives to a certain kind of customers the illusion of drinking non-macro beer. Disappointing...

I can’t improve on a lot of the derogatory (but applicable)comments of the other posters who show disdain for this brewer’s knack of taking traditional beer styles and torpedoing them with wussied out versions for mass consumption . Poured a clear brown and that is where any resemblance to a dunkel ended...weak aromas of adjuncts, over carbonated, fizzy watery mouth feel with no distinct finish and no after taste. Suffice to say this is neither a decent lager worth any characteristic at all except a weird over boiled hop presence that I found quite offensive. I was glad I was given one by a friend ....it saved me the trouble of buying 6 to taste and pouring 5 down the sink.
