Commercial Description:
Ruby red in colour, this all malt ale is brewed from a combination of roasted barley malts and English aroma hops. Smooth in taste. The hopping is generous but not bitter and has a unique flavour that has become a trademark for Sleeman.

NOTE: Known as "Sleeman Original Dark 50* Amber Ale" in the US.

Dark in colour only. The taste - pure, unadulterated macrobrew.

Red/Brown color. Probably the Sleeman product with the most persistant head. In mouth it doesnt really honor the style, no sweet toffee, not much maltiness, not much bitterness, very light. Lacks of character.

Crystal clear dark amber ale with a medium sized off-white head. Hoppy aroma and some very minimal mild malt and fruit. Flavour is odd, metallic, with some molasses and brown sugar as well as an unidentifiable sour, sulphurous smell. Horrible balance with very little bitterness and plenty of sickly sweetness. The worst I've had from Sleeman's yet... and that's saying something.

"Dark," in this case, means "amber." Not much of a head. The aroma is caramel and butterscotch with little trace of the hops that the commercial description mentions. It’s fairly watery in the mouth. About the only flavor that it carries is caramel malts. There’s a bit of a dirty, earthy hop bitterness in the finish. What’s this doing in the Chicago area?

This is dark? Amber color with a smallish light tan head. Smells light tomato juice. Lots of flavors, very few would typically be used my ratings of beers. No, not worth the effort.

Bottle. Poured clear brown with a large frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate roasted malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium sweet toasted flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Sweet drinkable beer.

Bottled - Blue Meaney Toronto. On first drinking this I thought it was an imitation of Newcastle Brown and I still think this is what they are aiming for but it is slightly thinner yet has more going on with a bit more nuttiness. Would try again to compare the two.
