Commercial Description:
Grisette is a a Belgian farmhouse ale which was originally brewed in the Hainaut Province to be the beer of the miners in the area, just as Saison was the beer of the farmers. It was lighter than saison and frequently contained wheat as well as barley malt (as does the Sly Fox version). The name is derived from the French word for grey, referring to the young women (the grisettes) who doled out pints as the men exited from the mines while still dressed in their grey factory frocks. The style is nearly extinct and will be an interesting addition to the adventuresome and ever-growing Sly Fox portfolio.

Many, many draught tulips at Egajdzis’ house on 10/06/06
Soft peachy-tangerine colored body almost seems to have a hint of salmon-pink in it, though it also has a brass-golden tint as well. Slight glassiness, mostly clear, unfiltered and with gentle carbonation rising in the liquid to create and sustain a white head that provides ample lacing.
Light perfume in the nose is soft and speaks of delicate yeast nuances that create a lightly spiced, and softly invigorating aroma. Hints of lavendar and juniper, perhaps, with well-attenuated honey-like malts leaving a dry, aromatic graininess. Almost smells like rye, though I know there’s none in there. A soothing creaminess sits on the end, almost oat-like and well-matched to the perky beginning. Delightfully hopped, there is a notion of wet, green grass and fragrant lilacs. Incredibly seductive and surprisingly full in strength for its softness with positively no off-notes and a very classy yeast that dosent pump the aroma full of crude esters/phenols. Light strawberries and apples (faint) are about the extent. No alcohol noted, not surprisingly.
Deliciously malted, but equally well-attenuated, there is just a touch more here than your classic pils malt honey base. Just a smidgeon of baguette brushed with warm caramel. It quickly fades/becomes balanced by a pert bitterness that seems phenol driven or perhaps white pepper. Hops are juicy but not nearly overdone, lending more grassiness and almost a light tropical fruit nature that is probably a combination of yeast derived ester and hop. Carbonation is soft, gently engaging and produces a frothy effect on the finish. Dryness emerges moreso as it warms, but especially on the finish, where light apple/pearskin-like notes provide a reserved, dry fruitiness that matches the malt perfectly. Light yeast tartness crackles, cleansing the palate. Don’t find much wheat apparency, but then, I always have a tough time picking it out in saisons. A brilliant work of brewing, both delicate and flavorful. A touch of astringency builds on the palate, though it may just be wheat tanginess, but it somewhat distracts from the otherwise soft nature of the beer.

Poured a hazy golden color with a medium sized, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of fresh grapefruit, vanilla, lemongrass, yeast, wheat, clove, and orange peel. Taste of honey, toasted dough, citrus fruits, juicy styrians, light banana, tart wheatiness, white pepper, and a dry, yeasty finish. Cheers...

On tap - Capone’s - Norristown PA - bright clear yellow gold in color with a bright white head. Mild spiced aroma. Very crisp and very dry mouthfeel. Flavor is similar to a wit with a lemon in it. Would be a great summer beer.

Hazy orange color with a medium white head. Aroma has lots of citrus, yeast, bread, and some earth - really draws you in. Flavor is doughy with some nice earthy-spiced hop taste. Some yeast, dough, earth, and citrus in there as well. Tasty and refreshing with a nice tingly finish. One of the better Sly Fox brews I’ve had lately.

Semi-cloudy & deep yellow color, minimal bright white head, good lacing around the glass, nose full of yeast, honey, light barley & a hint of grass, full-bodied, the small glass certainly goes quick though, very drinkable, flavors started off very sweet but finished on the dry & tart side, lots of carbonation in the body, flavor notes included honey, barley, alcohol & yeast, very crisp & enjoyable, the finish as mention was on the bitter side with hints of more honey & alcohol, very nice beer

On tap at Capones. Pours a very light blond hazy almost cloudy, with a nice tight sticky white head. Aroma is grainy, cereal, mineral, toasty doughy malts with a slight clovey phenolic Belgian yeastiness- saison like with some grits. Flavor is slight lemon zest, toasty malts, slight grassy hops, some herbs, spice, earth and slight drying leather with lemons in the end with a dry peppery finish. Pretty good and refreshing. Nice.
