Commercial Description:
Nelson Sauvin is a variety of hop grown in New Zealand. It is not widely used here in the U.S. but we've decided to experiment with it because of it's fantastic citrus flavor and aroma. Early trials with Nelson Sauvin immediately revealed it to be somewhat different in its brewing character than other hop cultivars. This variety imparts certain grape-like flavors to the beer.

Known years: 2007

Pours a murky orange brown. Great creme head. Smooth hoppy nose and the flavor is niiice. Real great smooth and bitter edge that is an underlining theme. I almost want to say there is a grapey edge on here. Only reason I pull that one out is a very small bit of this reminds me of Cantillon St. Lamvinus at its best. Raelly though it is just nice and smooth. A real pleasure to drink. This on cask would probably be great. I have had the Target and Centennial besides this, and this is my favorite to this point.

(Rating in comparison to the reson of the IPA project, Jan ’08 @ Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn) I’d never had Nelson Sauvin hops before, and I really enjoyed them. What jumped out at me in the aroma and the finish is lychee fruit. Grapes and light fruit also prevalent in the aroma, fairly bitter as well.

Clear orange color with frothy off with head. Great lacing. Citrus fruity aroma. Lighty sweet taste. Fruity with grapefruit and pineapple notes throughout. Nice oily body.

On tap at the Phoenixville location. Poured an amber color with an off white head. Very nice aromas that consisted of citrus, pine, some caramel, and grapes (had a nice wine like characteristic to it). Tastes of citrus, pine, caramel, and lighter grapes. This is one of my favorite of the IPA series. I want more of this one!

Tap at Hop Devil. Wasn’t crazy about this, though the keg was a bit old.

Before I start writing, let me say that, before I was big in to craft beer, I was in Nelson, New Zealand. We were on a bus ride, and we drove by a hop field that the driver pointed out. He said what kind of hops they were, which I don’t remember in the slightest, but I bet it was these.

Pours deep orange with a decent head. Weird, acrid bite. Kind of oily. Earthy hops. Kind of cheesy. Quite bitter. Didn’t enjoy this too much, though I do think the comment about using this as a saison hop is right on.
