SturmWulf (63), USA Aug 31, 2007 Lots of aroma of malt,, toast, touch of caramel, spiciness, slightly metallic. Poured a nice clear mahogany, a huge creamy off white(looked like cream from milk it was so creamy) head that slowly receded with heavy lacing. The head was so thick and creamy that it actually stood up about one inch above the rest of the head where I poured the ale into the pint. Flavor was fantastically malty, touch of roasted malt, touch of spiciness, slight taste of caramel, taste came in waves that was touch of bitter, then sweet, then toasted then a touch of bitter, medium to full body that was thick, creamy and sticky, medium carbonation, with a quick, dry, pleasant slightly bitter finish. This is a very good ale!!! I enjoyed it immensely and will have it again. Received it in a brew trade with a friend. Was served in a pint.
johntreeter (96), Greenwood, Indiana, USA Sep 7, 2008 12 oz bottle. pours a clear burnt wood color with a one finger lasting and lacing head. Aroma of roasted malts and a little bit of cardboard way in the back. Flavor is similar without the cardboard and a mild balancing bitterness in the finish. Light body, mild carb, wet texture, and smooth finish. Fine Irish brew. SeanMacGC (40), Dublin, Ireland Sep 7, 2008 Draught. Pours chestnut brown, with small, but durable, head. Toasted malt on the nose, and quite rounded on the palate, with notes of caramel, tough hints of a metallic aftertaste. bsm80 (99), Massapequa, New York, USA Sep 6, 2008 Updated: Sep 7, 2008Deep amber pour, nice lacing tan head, malty with a slight hint of hops, well-balanced, caramel, nice toasty flavor, aftertaste stays with you, which is a good thing in this case, enjoy this one. REDBOSOX (42), Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, USA Aug 31, 2008 This is a nice bronze-colored ale that looks good and tastes pretty decent. It has a dry, malty taste with a fair, though slightly metallic finish. Strange, considering it only went from the bottle to the glass. Still, it’s a fine beer that I’m sure to drink again. wheresthepath (227), Buckinghamshire, England Aug 28, 2008 [on tap at O’Naill’s, Reading] I’m sure ABV was 4.5%, but I could be wrong. Poured a deep chestnut brown with a small but lasting creamy head. Quite unusual to have a keg (ie non-cask-conditioned) nowadays that hasn’t been nitro’d - which is a shame as this clearly had far more flavour than the nitro’d Caffrey’s sold alongside it. In actual fact, for a keg ale, this is pretty decent - some brown sugar sweetness and plenty of malt followed by a fulfilling earthy hop bitterness. Nicely balanced, smooth and easy to drink. My only criticism would be a slight metallic note that came through in the aftertaste - but even this was far less pronounced than in other keg beers. I wonder just how good this beer could get if Diageo could be bothered to cask condition it...
