I’ve had this beer many times from a bottle and thought it was a pretty good beer. However, over the weekend, I tried it on tap in a little Irish Bar in the French Quarter. I was really surprised at how good this beer was! I had many beers that day (lol) but this one was really great. Awesome flavor, really smooth and overall a really good beer.

Dec 25, 2009 (12 ounce bottle - pint glass) Pours a translucent brown liquid with a big head that leads to a thick lacing. Roasted malt taste with notes of chocolate and coffee. Maybe some herbal and floral hop qualities too. Creamy texture, medium bodied and average carbonation.

Dec 24, 2009 Draft at Miller’s Ale House in Ft. Myers, FL. Creamy egg-white head, dark amber color. Subtle carbonation, medium body, big lace, very smooth. Caramel, light coffee aroma. Malty and refreshing, light bitter finish, would have been better at a warmer temperature.

Dec 23, 2009 Bottle. Loved this beer. Nice reddish-brown color. Not much head. Smells of malt, slightly sweet. Flavor, good balance, leaning a bit to the malt side. Have to have another.

Dec 22, 2009 I have yet to try as many Irish ales as I’d like -- so I can’t make a highly informed comparison to other Irish ales -- but Smithwick’s is definitely one of my favorite session ales and my favorite Irish ale to date. It has a sweet, caramel, citrus aroma and a balanced taste: medium sweetness, lightly bitter, and lightly sour. Light body, a thin texture, soft carbonation, and a medium creamy tan head. The finish is rather clean, leaving only a bit of sweetness behind. I find this ale refreshing and very agreeable for a long night of drinking. It goes down smooth and its alcohol content is enough to feel but low enough to make room for many pints. I love my Smithwick’s.

Dec 11, 2009 Dark brown color but relatively close to black. Has a sweeter malts aroma with some roasty and barley undertones. Flavor is pretty much full of sweeter malts and barley. Leaves a subtle malt aftertaste. This is a good brew to start off a night.

Dec 10, 2009 This is just one of those flat Irish beers, watery, foamy. Tasted like apple. Not much else. What’s funy is the bartender was out of Chimay and suggested Smithwick’s instead, saying, "If you like Chimay, you should try this." I did, but only to humor him. If you like ales like Guinness, Murphy, or Boddington’s, you should try this, that’s what I say.

Aroma of butterscotch and malt, slight pepper in the background.
Tastes of scotch, malt and caramel.
Medium body.
Not a bad beer, easy to drink.
