Commercial Description:
A hoppy, dry ale featuring a fantastic bouquet of Cascade hops in the nose. Deep gold in color with a tight, snow white head and pronounced hop flavor. Extensive "dry hopping imparts a strong hop aroma from the essential oils without imparting excessive bitterness.

On tap at the brewery. I drank this beer before I realized that I was done. Appearently very drinkable, but also very forgettable. Very little hop aroma or flavor. Stick with the ligher stuff from this place.

With the departure of GABF multi-medal-winning Ron Downer and his Rocky River Brewing Company from the local scene a few years ago, the burden of good beermaking has fallen to Marty Velas of the Calhouns restaurant family. Marty is no slouch himself, and produces (with the help of some excellent assistant brewers) his own collection of world-class ales and lagers. The Appalachian is my personal favorite and regular quaff. Wonderful nose, aggressive hop character, but with a delicate malt balance. This is one of the three or four best pale ales I’ve ever tasted. Cheers!

Bottle courtesy of tronraner. Pours copper with a thin white head. Smells earthy with some dry malt. Tastes moderately bitter and peppery with a dry finish.

pale copper color. Thin aroma. Flavor pops on this one though. Grapefruit pine hops. Better than the sum of its parts.

Citrus aroma with some sweet malts. Pours golden pale with a thin white head that doesn’t last. Nice pale ale, actually pretty hoppy, citrus and pine resin flavors, balanced by some honey malts, very good hop flavor and bitterness. Solid pale ale.

Bottled. Poured slightly hazy medium orange with a light dusting of off-white head. The aroma picked up candied lighter fruits and caramel supporting earth, pine, and grapefruit hoppage. The flavor was quite sharp.. with lots of grainy, fruity simpler sugars at the core and a rough bitterness surrounding.. toasty caramel and piney bitterness on the finish. Lighter-bodied with high carbonation.. got caught up toward the back of the mouth. This was a hair below average, but drinkable.

Tap @ Gatlinburg Brew Pub. Pours a clear golden with a small white head that fades and leaves some lacing. Aroma of citrus hops, floral hops, and light malt. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium thin mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness. Good.
