Commercial Description:
Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins. Beer pours dark as night with deep tan head, fingers thick. Nice lacing on my beer mug. Aroma was of bitter roast and milk. The flavor was a full rich and sweet milky chocolate with lactic notes, some coffee flavor and lots of bitter roast to balance things out. The mouthfeel on this guy was thick, almost chalky as it coated my tongue and mouth. I really enjoyed this experience!

22oz bottle @Vero Beach Throwdown-pours a brown head and black color. Aroma is dark malt-chocolate/molasses, some earthy hops. Taste is dark malt-chocolate/molasses/licorice-acidic, earthy hops. OK carbonation. Not my style but interesting and nicely done. Occasional. Thanks MGumby for sharing.

Appearance: Pours a black body with a medium-sized, foamy, dark tan head. Smell: Roasty aroma with full notes of blackstrap molasses and fire-charred aniseed. Lighter background hints of raisins and smoke. Taste: Roasted, black malts that’s all at once smokey and sweet. Tastes of bittersweet chocolate, licorice, molasses, and cauterized cream crowd the palate and swarm the taste buds. Earthy, spicy bitterness remains light. Touch of fruitiness. More smoke and roast on the sweetish finish. Mouthfeel: A hair above medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A very drinkable, very enjoyable brew from Smuttynose.

2008 bomber from pforei. thanks paul!

a viscous pour leads to an opaque nearly black shade of brown. it’s topped by a foam like marshmallow-y cocoa colored head that paints the glass as it retreats. aroma is faintly of coffee with a bunch of chocolate, black raisins and some ashy char. the palate is not even in the realm of sweet as far as baltics go... huge bonus. the flavor is rather port/ juicy red wine like with more black raisins and chocolate along with wood, roasty grain and a dry bittered finish. coffee pops up in the aftertaste. this leans on full bodied. very creamy texture and chewy mouth feel. simplistic and well crafted...

This was a bomber bottle at room temperature, which is definitely the way to sample dark beers. Big brown head on this ol’ bear. Another eccentric label drawing by Smuttynose. Strong alcohol in the nose, with some sharp hops and yeast also - maybe even a touch of mold? The flavor packs a wallop, and comes in somewhere between an imperial stout and an imperial porter. It is definitely the most potent thing I have tasted out of Portsmouth - coffee, roast grains, a touch of figs and dates, and a little whiskey too. There is a strong finish, with sweetness followed by cooling hops. This brew will grab you by the collar and make you holler - and you’ll enjoy it too!

Pours black with a medium to large mocha head. Aroma is dark roasts, espresso, vanilla, milk. Taste is about the same. A very good and creamy porter with a great mouthfeel!
