NobleSquirrel (1100), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 19, 2009 Bomber from Beerlando. Pours an opaque black. Nose is rich, roasty and acrid. Notes of dried cherries and coffee, as wll as alcohol. On taste, it is robust and sweet. Quite bitter with a kick of alcohol. Distantly phenolic and deep. This is a pretty interesting beer, albeit somewhat overpowering. Good. chimplechamp (463), Oslo, Norway Oct 17, 2009 bottle- pours black with a big tan head, nose is fragrant with chocolate cake cherries, slightly tartness, coffee maybe slight smoke taste is smooth thick mouthfeel taste is well balanced between sweet malty, fruity, cherry, licorice. definitely licorice in the finish. maybe raisins and vanilla too. complex. and delicious. thoroughly enjoyed. LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 13, 2009 One damn good Baltic Porter. Cold season is coming and this is a great beer to bring it in. Aroma was big and thick. Strong chocolate malt with a black licorice hint. Pour was a nice deep dark black with a thin tan ring on top. Taste was thick and chewy. Dark chocolate, burnt malt and very milky. Tastes like a dark chocolate milk shake. Sweet aftertaste and strong carbonation. Very complex and deliciousl Changed (161), Ithaca, New York, USA Oct 11, 2009 22oz bomber. Pours black with a small tan head that uniquely dissipates almost instantly. No lacing on the English pint glass. Aroma isn’t very strong- roasted malt and some chocolate. Flavor was oddly more enjoyable on the first sip compared to the last. Very straight forward flavor: chocolate, coffee, slight vanilla. Difference between this and every other porter I’ve had is the ABV. At 8.7%, this may be my favorite porter... Smuttynose makes another damn good beer... CamdenD (606), Madrid, Spain Oct 11, 2009 Roasted punch everywhere. This beer is perhaps the best example of an American-made strong porter. Smuttynose, the most underrated craft brewer on the east coast. Guerde (693), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Oct 9, 2009 (bottle from ditmier, thanks!) Pours black with a medium tan head that reduces to a thin ring around the snifter. The aroma is initially not all that great, with some scents of creamed corn, mocha, and roasted malt. As this warmed however, the aroma opens up and yields scents of dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, and cherry. There is some booze as well, but not enough to detract from the other scents. Further warming intensifies the chocolate and coffee, with some smoke and vanilla showing up as well. The taste is pretty simple, with chocolate, brown sugar, roasted malt, and a bit of raisin, but really nothing else. Mouthfeel is medium, carbonation is decent, and the finish is lightly roasted. Thanks again Eric! elgiacomo (64), Ringgold, Georgia, USA Oct 3, 2009 Bomber bottle, 2009. Pours very dark brown, nearly black, with a nice half-inch brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and a touch of sour milk. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, with hints of dark fruits and vanilla. Alcohol bite is noticeable. Full, creamy mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Baltic Porters are one of my favorite styles, and while this is an excellent example, I feel it is a bit over-rated. Sinebrychoff (Koff) Porter is superior. Duck-Rabbit’s is very good, but inconsistent. I’ve only had this one Smuttynose Baltic Porter, so I cannot commend on its consistency. Every Sinebrychoff I’ve had has been exactly the same, and is, IMHO, the best Baltic Porter out there. PapaSkeetSkeet (65), , Massachusetts, USA Sep 29, 2009 Wow, this was one hell of a brew. In my memory this serves as the definitive example of a perfect head, color, and lacing in a beer. A rich dark brown head I don’t see very often. Aroma is of intense chocolate and coffee. The flavor also tastes of these two wonderful dark roasts along with additional maltiness and sweetness. I will have it again, and the rating may even get bumped up (Flavor 10/10???)
