OldGrowth (1405), North Carolina, USA Sep 20, 2009 bottle, from Julio’s. Good aroma, sweet and bitter. Chocolate, coffee, I’m getting marshmellow. Blackish brown color, good head, ok lace. Bitter sweet flavor. Like aroma. Thick body, oily creamy mouthfeel, though I thought it got liter as it warmed, bitter dry finish. Tasty brew, flavor was favorite part. stayed constant through out it’s consuming. Nice mix on the bitterness and sweetness. shadey (1496), Rochester, New York, USA Sep 19, 2009 22oz bottle. Silky black pour with a thin head of dark tan cream. Dark chocolate aroma, but not a lot of roast. I like what I’m smelling. I think baltic porters should be more on the chocolate side than burnt roast. There is only the slightest amount of dark fruit or vinous flavors, but those that are there are welcome. This is an extremely well-put-together beer. I like it. ditmier (1015), Boise, Idaho, USA Sep 18, 2009 2009 Bottle - Thanks JCB! - Pours is a vicsous dk brown with a brown head...aroma is chocolate covered cherry, sweet dark malt, and some tart roast...flavour is similar, cocoa, burnt coffee, a fine malty line that is ultimately sweet, but tempered with the bitterness of the coffee...ample carbonation and a lingering roast flavour in the mouth...I wish this was carried locally... Snojerk321 (1911), San Diego, California, USA Sep 16, 2009 22oz bottle. Pours a deep brown / black with a good sized bubbly tan head that quickly disappeared. Nose of some dark berry fruits, coffee grounds, and cocoa powder. Flavors of semi sweet chocolate, light booze on the finish, some dark cherry in the backdrop as well. bigrond (1043), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 15, 2009 This as a very good porter. I enjoyed it a great deal. It’s roasted malt character is prefectly displayed with in the robust brew.
MartinT (5026), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 13, 2009 My Bottom Line:
This Baltic Porter’s complex malt display showcases biscuits, coffee beans, crunchy dark chocolate and roastiness in an elegant mouthfeel.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the brown-lined blackness.
-This is yet another Smuttynose brew in which malt flavors are superbly extracted.
-This is very drinkable for its size; the dextrins are kept in check while still displaying enough of their sweetness to be pleasurable.
-I honestly didn’t expect anything less from this, one of the best breweries in northeastern America.
Bottle. tgncc (796), Bellmore, New York, USA Sep 13, 2009 Nice aroma of chocolate, roasted coffee, raisin, malty. The appearance is an attractive deep brown/black, tan head. The flavor is chocolate, fruit, raisin, coffee, cream, light roastyness. The finish is sweet, with a bitter chocolate, and roasted coffee bittering, and a relatively small hop component, which takes a minute to surface. Nice thick, creamy mouthfeel. Excellent representation of a great style not so easy to find. fata2683 (835), Panama City, Florida, USA Sep 12, 2009 bottle, pours black, medium tan head. Aroma is sour peach, black patent malt, and a roasty coffee. Lots of chocolate, wow. I love the roastyness. Nice.
