Nose is a bit sweet, like bitter chocolate, some coffee and roasty malt. Rich coffee and chocolate flavors, a plummy fruit note. Very silky body, rather full. I shared this with a non-beer geek, and he was blown away. Delicious! emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

Pours a dark black brew allowing no light through. One finger dark brown head. The aroma is tart and fruity, anise was mentioned by those I tasted with, sweet, chocolate, coffee. The flavor showed nice coffee, roast, light fruit, some spices, warming and sweet. The palate was thick and smooth with a warming finish. Probably my second favorite baltic porter. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 19/20 | Aug 16, 2008 650 ml, early 2008 vintage. Opaque with a quarter inch of sticky, lasting head. Nose is molasses, chocolate, raisin and coffee. Flavor is chocolate, caramel, espresso, raisins, split and dried hickory. Some hickory, oak, whiskey, vanilla and anise in the aftertaste. Medium-heavy body is balanced well between the syrupy and the dry, but a little too bubbly. Excellent beer. iowaherkeye (1877), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 25, 2008 22oz, Bottle Conditioned in 2008 thanks to notalush, thanks! Deep brown pour--black in the glass--with a 1/2 finger tan head, fading to a thick ring and film. Coffee, raisins, tar, chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of soy in the aroma--sorry to list, but this was a big conglomeration of the above, with maybe a hint of piney hops--quite tasty. Flavor continued with most of everything and some light flower petals. Not too sweet, and not overly bitter--though it does lean a bit towards the sweet side. A little more ash in the finish than I would’ve liked--still a little piney and dry, with a bit of alcohol noted. Full body with moderate carbonation. An excellent beer, that I would compare to Ruby Black CharlesDarwin (1864), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 6, 2009 22oz Bottle, purchased at Wakefield Liquors - Wakefield, RI. Dense, oily chocolate brown pour, with a tall finger of cocoa-powder colored fluffy head. Aroma is heavy on the roast, twangy and full of charred bread crusts and almond powder. Chocolately and expressive. Flavor is intense and rich roast-forward stout. Brown sugar, umami, nutella, toffee, and a brisk bit of hopwork. This is quite good. A really nice, deep complex malt base with a nice clean snap, well integrate alcohols, and decent drinkability for a big beer. Pilsner malt character is quality and adds to the beer. This is a fantastic version of the style. mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 17, 2008 Courtesy Dickinsonbeer. Thanks Paul! Pours black, with a creamy off white head. Smells of big roasty toasted malts, with a lighter chocolate influence. Smells pretty inviting. The flavor is much of th same, as the roasty malts and nuts make up most of its flavor characters. The chocolate was there for moral support. Very nicely balanced, great flavor. Had a touch of some coffee in there too. Another great offering from Smutty. Crosling (1856), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 19, 2008 Dark brown color, but appears black in the glass. Very large, frothy and well developed dark tan head. Vibrant nose, but lacks a bit of depth. Still has some pleasant notes of chocolate covered raisins. Flavor is very complex with notes of chocolate, pit fruit, toffee and a touch of coffee. Very nice finish as well on this bad boy.
