| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2009 bottle, from Julio’s. Good aroma, sweet and bitter. Chocolate, coffee, I’m getting marshmellow. Blackish brown color, good head, ok lace. Bitter sweet flavor. Like aroma. Thick body, oily creamy mouthfeel, though I thought it got liter as it warmed, bitter dry finish. Tasty brew, flavor was favorite part. stayed constant through out it’s consuming. Nice mix on the bitterness and sweetness. fredandboboflo (1417), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 22, 2008 Bottle. Aroma of coffee and roasted malt, pleasant, but rather straightforward for such an ambitious brew. Flavor continued to be fairly standard, coffee notes, chocolate notes, nuttiness. Mouthfeel was very, very thick, full, and ultimately creamy. I’m a little torn on this beer, it started off for me with some clashes between the malty flavor, yeasty notes, and overall body. That said, it did grow on me to the point that disregarding my initial impressions I would rate it higher. Rambling, rambling, rambling, I’ll leave it all as is for now and hope to give it another go. drowland (1417), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 15, 2009 On tap at Proof into a pint glass. Pours dark brown, almost black with a tiny head. Aroma is sweet roasted malts and a good dose of salty soy. The flavor is sweet and a bit sour up front followed by an apparent smokiness that leads to a roasted coffee exhale. Thick and almost syrupy but good carbonation. SuzyGreenberg (1379), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 11, 2008 Updated: Sep 27, 200922 oz. bottle - thanks to riversideak for bringing this out; smuttynose is the real deal and i’ve wanted to try this for a while; jet black with thin tan head; roasty, licorice, coffee, chocolate; so sweet and smooth; thick, sticky body; just a kick ass baltic in every way; wow, thanks alex; this beer rocks and one i need much, much more of; ISO of a case!! haha
2009 Bottle enjoyed on 9/27/09 - wow, first impression remains solid as this is easily one of my top 15 top beers i’ve ever had; what helps this one stand out is that is doesn’t fall into the "over sweet pit" that most baltics do; this had that candy sweetness, but is is just part of the brew rather than dominating to the point of creating an overly thin and sweet texture; not sure if that is under lagering, slightly limiting the attenuation or what; but Smutty gets is just right nickd717 (1374), Palo Alto, California, USA

Pours black with a thick tan head and good retention. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roast, smoke, and dark fruit. Flavor is smoky with some meaty notes (which is a good thing IMO). Also roasted malt, coffee, rich chocolate, berries, and raisins. Palate is smooth and creamy with fairly full body and lingering smoke. Really good Baltic porter overall.
