Commercial Description:
Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins. Botella. The colour is pitch black with a medium well lasting light brownish head. The aroma is bustling with roasted malt along with coffee and chocolate. Very good well filling mouthfeel. The flavour has lots of roasted malt along with chocolate, coffee, coffee, bitter hops and some dark fruits. Tasty brew indeed.

Bottle @ TFODRBSG, Ulfborg, 2008.
[thank you, MissDolle]
’ Pours deep black with a small, creamy, beige, film head. Aroma has soft chocolate, lightly vinious with notes of vanilla and cocoa. Okay mouthfeel, but gets a bit too fat and oily for its own good. Very vinious flavour, almost burning. Hard roasted with weak chocolate notes. Again, I get a very underwhelming Smuttynose.

(22oz. bottle) Pours a black body with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, lactose, noticeable alcohol, some charred, and black licorice. Flavor of roasted malt, cocoa, and light coffee with a somewhat chalky mouthfeel and dry finish.

22oz bottle @Vero Beach Throwdown-pours a brown head and black color. Aroma is dark malt-chocolate/molasses, some earthy hops. Taste is dark malt-chocolate/molasses/licorice-acidic, earthy hops. OK carbonation. Not my style but interesting and nicely done. Occasional. Thanks MGumby for sharing.

Bottle... VBWT2008... This beer rocks!... Pitch black lager with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki-colored, everlasting head. The aroma is a swirl of rich, roasted nuts, creamed coffee and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and velvety with tingly carbonation. Chocolaty, deeply roasted, medium bitter finish. Smuttynose continues to be one of the most solid, yet least talked-about, breweries out there. This world class bottle of beer was popped open by mgumby10. Thanks for sharing!

Bottle sampled on 5/22/08: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing dark tan head. Aroma of sweet dark toasty caramel and roasted malts with a touch of black cherries. Body starts fairly full, rich and dark caramely sweet with some sticky roasty smoky character and raisin flavor before a doughy dark chocolate finish. A nice Baltic porter.
