Commercial Description:
Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins. 22 oz. bottle courtesy of j12601. I have been wanting to try this for some time as it is one of my favorite styles. This pours very dark brown in color with a medium tan head. The aroma is deep roasted malts, rich chocolate, black coffee notes, and dark fruits. The flavor is more heavily roasted malt goodness, rich chocolate, dark fruits (raisins), molassess all working together nicely. At times, the alcohol makes itself known but not in a distracting way. There is a hint of acidity that adds a little bite. Medium full bodied with a smooth texture that makes for a nice beer to have with the cooler temps we have tonight. This lived up to my expectations and am happy I have a couple more to enjoy.

22 oz. brown bomber. No freshness date seen. Slightly contaminated. Produced a gusher when opened. Poured (gushed more like it) out a deep chocolate brown, with a huge tan head. Over carbonated to the max. Aromas are licorice & not much else. Burnt malts in the flavors. Not that good a beer. Maybe I’ll re-rate it when I can find an uncontaminated bottle.

This is becoming a preferred style of mine. This one looks gorgeous. Black, thick dark brown head. Nice lacing too. Aroma is oaky, along with big bag of dried fruit, some mochachino. The palate is light at 1st, then it warmed and tasted a bit boozy, rich, oily, roasted malt present, nice. Very true to the style and enjoyable.

Almost non-aromatic with only a faint hint of raisins. Black pour with an enormous brown head. Thick, chewy mouthfeel. Flavors are of stewed prunes, horehound, and charcoal. When you throw it down hard you can taste licorice. Somewhat grassy finish. Drinks like an imp stout, but far less bitter.

Bottle courtesy Degarth. Pours black with a one finger tan head that fades leaving some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit. Taste is the same as aroma with a hint of caramel. Medium full mouthfeel with a mild to moderate amount of bitterness with warm but never hot alcohol. Very good.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Gilly’s, 8/17/09

Aroma: Coffee, chocolate, roasted malts
Appearance: Dark brown color, 3 fingers of fluffy brown head, lots of lacing
Flavor: Big maltiness, burnt, some faint smokey, with the same flavors apparent in the nose, some licorice, light bitterness, but really just a malt bomb all over
Palate: A bit on the oily side, medium to full body, chewy and creamy
Overall Impression: I believe this is my first Baltic Porter, and I found it to be quite tasty. A nice beer indeed. I’m glad this is my first from the style, because it is pretty tasty, making me want to try more Baltic Porters.
