Commercial Description:
Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins. 2008 bomber, with a big thanks to john_adam2002! Pours black with a moderate brownish tan head, some lacing. Aroma has some sweet maltiness, with chocolcate syrup, espresso, milk chocolate, and ripe dark fruits. Flavor is a bit sweet with more milk chocolate, espresso, nuts, and some dark fruit. A nice and enjoyable baltic porter, thanks again Adam!

Bomber in trade with doublejay-pm94. Yeah, this is what all big dark beers aspire to be. This is a luciously smooth, big silky brew. Nose is of ripe fruit and ground up walnuts. The moderate pour generates a heatly rolicking head that tastes great wven when you are slurping it up so it doesn’t stain the precious counter top. Head settles fast as do oily legs. Body is big and full...like godzilla after pillaging Tokyo. A big hit of chocolate malts is accented with coffee in the slightest amount. this is huge since I have been raving on the over use of coffee as an ingredient as of late. It actually works in this beer. A gentle bozziness complimented by a final hint of sweet rasins mixd with sun dried tomatoes eminates from the center of the mouthfeel that leads you stumbling for more in the finish of tingly coffee as the end. A fine, fine brew.

Bottle shared with Midetd. Pours a pitch black with a nice tan head. Has a medium mouthfeel with a black body. Smells like a full body brew with heavy hops. Tastes like I am getting a hop blast with some leather and earth. Overall a nice brew.

22 oz. bomber. Bottle-conditioned in: 2009. Pours an oily, VERY deep mahogany with a thick mocha head. A rich aroma of roasted coffee, raisins, dark chocolate, vanilla beans, and a touch of grapefruit. Medium to full-bodied and silky smooth. The flavor starts with some sweet caramel, raisins, and molasses. Dark chocolate and coffee follow. Some sour grapefruits at the end. A roasty, lingering dryness finishes things off. A bit of warming alcohol is apparent.

A big fan of Smuttynose and was surprised to see a beer of theirs in the store I hadn’t had. Nice label design. Dark coffee smell. When I tipped the bottle, the darkest night slipped down and thickly filled my glass. Black. I lifted the glass to the light, but, like a hefty patch of dark matter, none got through. A brown slick comprised of the tiniest of bubbles coated the surface. Upon first gulp, the fizziness introduced itself and managed to sneak in its flavorful malty, molasses-y, earthy friends. A few moments later, a warming feeling accompanied by a mild chalky mouth feel sauntered up and hung out for a while. Good stuff. I feel lucky to have such an amazing brewery nearby.

(bottle from ditmier, thanks!) Pours black with a medium tan head that reduces to a thin ring around the snifter. The aroma is initially not all that great, with some scents of creamed corn, mocha, and roasted malt. As this warmed however, the aroma opens up and yields scents of dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, and cherry. There is some booze as well, but not enough to detract from the other scents. Further warming intensifies the chocolate and coffee, with some smoke and vanilla showing up as well. The taste is pretty simple, with chocolate, brown sugar, roasted malt, and a bit of raisin, but really nothing else. Mouthfeel is medium, carbonation is decent, and the finish is lightly roasted. Thanks again Eric!

(bomber from j12601). Black color. Large tan head which is mostly diminishing. Aroma and flavor of alcohol, coffee, and very light fruit. Avg duration. Light alcohol finish. Slick texture. Soft carbonation. Spare lacing.
