Commercial Description:
Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins. Soft but intoxicating nose of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and slightly burnt aspects. Dark black beer with no head at all. Flavors of roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee. Some sweet and moderately tart ripe fruit. Roast lingers and fights with the sweetness for dominance. Dry lingering burnt and roasted malt flavors. Drinks insanely well, just an incredible beer.

(Rating #2539)

Clear dark brown body with ruby highlights and a small creamy brown head. Sweet roasted malt aroma with some chocolate, caramel, and molassas. Huge sweet roasted malt flavor, lots of caramel, some chocolate and light fruity hints. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation and a smooth creamy finish.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, cream, and a hint of hops. Poured black in color with a tiny brown head that diminished quickly. Opaque. No lacing. Flavor is medium sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, cream, alcohol, roasting, dark fruits, and a touch of hops. Medium body. Tingly chalky texture is not all that smooth. Average to lively carbonation. Sweet, alcoholic, chalky, roasted finish.

First of all, I would like the thank beastiefan2k - even though I am currently enjoying this beer in the comfort of my own home, he did offer some to me at a tasting earlier this weekend, and he seemed very upset that no one was drinking it - on behalf of everyone that was there, I AM SORRY EUGENE - there were just so many great beers there that we COULDN’T buy at a local store - okay, so you could have saved me 6.50, but there was Barrel-Aged Third Coast, and Pushing the Envelope Extreme, man! - how could this beer compete? - okay, so that’s out of the way - this is a pretty good Baltic Porter - it’s heavy on the tobacco and roast, with a strong cream sweetness, and rather apparent alcohol - some notes of wood and burnt vegetation - there is an ashy/char character that clashes a bit with the high sweetness, making it a bit clumsy and out of balance, but she tastes pretty good - but once again, I’M SORRY EUGENE.

Bottle: Near opaque pour with only a hint of light coming through at the edges. It also has a nice deep brown head. Charred aroma, along with an odd "sour milk" character- burnt dark fruits, lightly smoky/tobacco, a bit odd in the nose. The mouthfeel is creamy and mildly carbonated. Nice and dense. Lots of burnt character- dark fruits upfront, leading to more earthy character. Nice smooth booziness is present- dark chocolate liqueur balanced by some dark piny notes. Peppery and boozy overall with a balancing piny, espresso roast in the finish. A solid Baltic Porter.

Bottle. Thick black with a dense head on the pour. Big sweetness, raisins, brick roast, that sort of stuff in the aroma in the aroma. Huge body, tons of sweet, lots of coal. Like a bad child on christmas. Quite a tasty brew.

[1727-20080928] 22floz bottle. Browned leafy malt and mild green twig aroma. Black body with a long-lasting brown foamy head. Roasted malt flavour has boozy dark twig notes. Full body. Nicely made.
