2009 Bottle enjoyed on 9/27/09 - wow, first impression remains solid as this is easily one of my top 15 top beers i’ve ever had; what helps this one stand out is that is doesn’t fall into the "over sweet pit" that most baltics do; this had that candy sweetness, but is is just part of the brew rather than dominating to the point of creating an overly thin and sweet texture; not sure if that is under lagering, slightly limiting the attenuation or what; but Smutty gets is just right Skeegle (496), Maryland, USA

Hey, for five bucks you can’t beat this. 22 bomber for five bucks. The roasted flavors are those of nuts, chocolate, dark candied fruits, a smoke swig of nuttiness, and lots of roasted toffee/coffee/wheat/malted barley flavors. Perfect porter here. Just fantastic, and worth the wait!! hellbilly (1532), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA

a viscous pour leads to an opaque nearly black shade of brown. it’s topped by a foam like marshmallow-y cocoa colored head that paints the glass as it retreats. aroma is faintly of coffee with a bunch of chocolate, black raisins and some ashy char. the palate is not even in the realm of sweet as far as baltics go... huge bonus. the flavor is rather port/ juicy red wine like with more black raisins and chocolate along with wood, roasty grain and a dry bittered finish. coffee pops up in the aftertaste. this leans on full bodied. very creamy texture and chewy mouth feel. simplistic and well crafted... | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 5, 2008 This poured black in color with a moderate brown head that dissipated away. The nose was filled with aromas of dark chocolate, plum, raisin, coffee and some hazelnut. In the mouth it is medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated with great mouthfeel. There is lots of carbonation keeping this well-balanced and really enjoyable. matt7215 (979), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 17, 2009 my bobmer from a trade with cletus. shared with jessem and tupalev, others were there as well. pours black with a tan head. nice roasted malt aroma, coffee, and chocolate. flavours are similar with more caramel then the aroma. easy to drink for its weight and a jem of a porter overall. oteyj (773), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 23, 2008 Updated: Aug 4, 2009Pours motor oil black with large tan head that dissapates into a veneer. Nose of roasted barley, bitter chocolate, coffee, raisin, and hops. Upon first sip, I realized that this is one of the smoothest porters I’ve ever tasted. Oily and thick, caressing the tounge and mouth. Chewy and full bodied- this beer has so much character. Chocolate, deep roasted barley, and hops all fuse together in the perfect balance to create a true masterpiece. basewars (145), Albany, New York, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 11, 2009 Pours black with thick brown head which quickly dissipates. Minimal lacing. Aroma is full of raisins and chocolate. A slight bit of hops are detectable and a bit of port. Flavor is of chocolate and fruit. Plenty of coffee as well. Full bodied to say the least.
As it warms it mellows. The alcohol seems to dissipate (or maybe I’m just drunker), and the fruitier notes come forth.
Plenty happening in this one. Great beer. Leighton (296), New York, New York, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Sep 21, 2009 So solid. Had this guy on tap at Rattle and Hum during Craft Beer Week. Pours pitch dark with a soft off-white head. Smells of roasted malts and coffee. Taste: delicious, rich, sweet yet somewhat bitter. Quite smooth and full.
